All this to say--today I bought myself seven yards of dark green taffeta.

It was one of the things that my mother ensured I lost when I was disowned after graduating high school. I have missed it terribly for twenty years. In my dreams, frequently I am still wearing it.

I loved everything about that skirt. The swooshiness! I sounded like a sailing ship, taffeta grabs the air hard. It was wonderful for dancing in, and willing to be kilted up for tree-climbing. It spun beautifully. It washed easily. It put up with lolling in the grass without complaint.

A dark green 1980's taffeta prom dress. It has very puffy sleeves that go to the elbow, and a skirt that is nearly to the ankles in the back, and a few inches higher in the front.

In 1997 I found this dress at a Goodwill in Cottonwood, Arizona. It cost six dollars. I wore it and a peacock-feather mask for Halloween, then I cut off the sleeves and the top of the bodice, and proceeded to wear it at least twice a month until graduating high school in 2001.

A bit lost in Bath in 2002, my then-boyfriend tapped Anthony Stewart Head on the shoulder, and when he turned asked him if he could point us to a McDonald's. He said no and smiled knowingly at me (*I* recognized him; boyfriend didn't).
