Thousands will lose their livelihood, internet is permanently soiled by soulless content, huge amount of natural resources have been burnt for a very debatable net positive for humanity...

"Only useful tech will survive" is a meager satisfaction for the unconvinced sadly :(

Indie Game Post-mortem - Highrook A rocky road to Highrook So 'The Horror At Highrook' has been…

Ok, Nearly the end of the year, and 6 months since Highrook was released! I wrote a little postmortem, covering some nerdy production info and my thoughts on what it was like to be an indie in the last few years.

Always amazes me how much just a few white squares and lines can go a long way towards adding gamefeel to a very raw prototype.

I've read the linkedIn post of a former game dev student. He argued that genAI art deserved maybe more credits than trad painting or photograph... because you had to overcome your lack of culture first to make something believable.

I kid you not. We are f...ed.
(and yes he was horrible student)

Because of the discourse of right-wing politicians for years, a lot of french people now completely misunderstand the concept of laicism. It's truely shameful.

Death of the Author: An Alan Wake Series Retrospective
YouTube video by Noah Caldwell-Gervais Death of the Author: An Alan Wake Series Retrospective

"For the tech oligarchs in charge of this shit, they literally cannot conceive of why immitation is not enough. What they steal should be enough to make it work. Who they hurt should be enough to fuel the machine. And yet there is no magic, just typewriters stretching into empty rooms."

Le jeu du silence. Mine de rien pour moi ça a tout changé le jour où j'ai pu jouer aux gros jeux sony sans un bruit d'hélicoptère dans la pièce.

It's nothing crazy. Certainly not new or ground breaking, but I like how my brain is slowly organizing my code to find solutions to old issues I encountered on previous iterations of this exercice!

I can now expend the controller to do many many more things. Dashes and grappling hooks, here I come!

A graph showing gameplay states and how transition between them can be influenced by states of the previous post or user interactions?

A graph showing gameplay states and how transition between them can be influenced by states of the previous post or user interactions?

This physical state does not directly change the gameplay states but is used by individual states to decide if they should transition to another state. The same way a user interaction could. On this graph you can see the cause of state transitions :
blue == physical cause
orange = user input cause

A graph showing different states of world interaction based on collisions

A graph showing different states of world interaction based on collisions

But this time I organized the controller around 2 distinct states : the usual gameplay state (stand, run, jump, etc...) and a second physical interaction states dedicated to collisions and contacts with the world. The whole thing is managed at the "base" of the controller and do all collision stuff.

I always struggle to decide what should be managed by the base character controller and what should be managed by individual states of the state machine. Specifically, I'm always struggling with implementation and distribution of collision detection. I often end up with a lof of code duplication...

Working on a character controller always feels good. Including all the little tricks like coyote time and jump buffering... but also finding new ways of architecturing the whole thing to make it scaleable with complexity and compatible with AI scripting. And this time, I tried something new for me 🧵
