I get sent masses of music bc of my job tho (the stuff I like gets downloaded and put on ipod) so maybe not a ~normal listener experience

I mainly listen to music on physical/my ipod classic but I have a tidal subscription for making playlists for people/backcatalogue listening for stuff I’m reviewing/listening to some stuff before I decide to buy a physical copy

Jamiroquai review – hat-sporting acid jazz superstars are slick but lack substance The novelty headgear tally is high and frontman Jay Kay is in impressive voice – but strong material is smothered by polished playing and flashy production

sometimes being a music critic means you get to experience transcendence and reflect on the alchemy of human creativity....and sometimes you get sent to review a jamiroquai concert www.theguardian.com/music/2025/d...

Delighted that this has already raised almost £800. Last posting for Xmas 17th Dec. Perfect present for Glaswegians, history fans, city wanderers, people who don't want physical gifts, communists, anarchists, enjoyers of vintage left-wing gossip, and all hard to buy for comrades!

Help us challenge the Supreme Court’s judgment on trans rights | Good Law Project

You want there to be a legal challenge to this? Support the one that's already in progress that, if successful, will remove the risk of legal action against Guides and WI, or other organisations, for being trans inclusive goodlawproject.org/crowdfunder/...

03.12.2025 12:00 — 👍 88    🔁 86    💬 2    📌 5

Like, this is why they're targetting those organisations. They're shooting fish in a barrel because they know those organisations can't fight back. The organsiations that want to be trans inclusive are allies, not the enemy. Don't let the actual villains convince you otherwise

03.12.2025 11:31 — 👍 42    🔁 9    💬 2    📌 1

It's worth remembering that the government could stop the exclusion of trans people from public life any time they want.

MJ Noble
Songs From My Castle Tower
Doom Trip CD/DL
Each release from Los Angeles based singer, producer and flautist MJ Noble is a glimpse at a self-contained world, something like a purple-hued Final Fantasy game starting in an underground drum 'n' bass club. The new album from the self-described "d 'n'b fairy" is both effortlessly catchy and creatively sprawling, with Noble flexing and sharpening her artistic voice.
"I Will Ride" drops the listener into the heart of a perpetual breakbeat, a featherlight twin to her satin-smooth vocals, both in constant motion. "I'm Urs" goes deeper and darker, locking into a subby riff, while
"I'm In My Head" rises above the clouds, somehow existing in three tempos at once.
Noble's production is sleek but complex, with timewarping rhythmic elements that lend conviction to her lyrical themes of omnipresence and temporality ("Life and love are circular... I've been here before").
This time-bending quality is particularly fun on "Pay The Price", a righteous duet with Chemistry MC that sees Noble descend from the celestial sphere to deal with a timewaster ("You're out there chasing clout/I'm flying through clouds"). When Noble messes with the tempo here, it's with an earthly swagger.

Noble's flute is a defining voice in all her music, and here it takes on a superhuman character. When it soars, then trembles and trips on "Regret", it's unclear whether it's being electronically manipulated. On
"Stardust" it takes on the character of the surrounding elements: long breaths soaring like synths, and percussive trills, stop-start rhythms mimicking the tricksy beats flowing alongside.
With its imagery of dragons and swordfights, Noble's 2022 album Kind Blade wore its techno-medieval influences on its sleeve. Her musical and aesthetic references are still strong - and unabashedly fun - but it's exciting to see her break out into something more singular. On Songs From My Castle Tower, Noble is becoming something of an auteur.

Yes! @thewiremagazine.bsky.social nails the top 50!

For the issue, I had the great pleasure of interviewing Tristan Perich.

I also profiled @adambdonoval.bsky.social's Warm Winters Ltd, penned the regular and year-end Avant Rock columns, reviewed the new Anna von Hausswolff, and reflected on 2025.
