I hadn't heard about EX TENEBRIS and it's kickstarter, but this (looong) interview-meets-description definitely sold me on it. If "40k investigation but you don't play as fascists" sounds good to you, have a read.

Ex Tenebris is about hope in a grimdark universe. It's about making a good society in the aftermath of fascism. It's about fighting evil as a team, as protectors of a society worth living in.

And the mechanics centre this: Your characters are more powerful when they work together. You accumulate shadow that can corrupt your character but you reduce that shadow, not by indulging vices, but by sharing your doubts and fears with others, or by taking solace in creative, human pursuits.

Character creation supports that too. You play flawed misfits working for an agency that has limited resources and low status - no exterminatus for you. You create a team as much as individual characters, choosing team roles and doing group backstory flashbacks.

I wanted a dark, scary setting, but one where you're playing the good guys. There are power-armoured fascists but they're the enemy. Your aim is to protect people from supernatural evil, not burn witches and mutants. And you are protecting a society that is a beacon of hope, not hate.

So I haven't talked much about Hope in Ex Tenebris. The aesthetic and vibes are all grimdark. But the conceit of the game is: what if, in a universe full of horrors, people pulled together, stood by their ideals, and built a society of democracy, tolerance and freedom?
