"I do." It's ironic, hearing that from Izuku with their upcoming plan.

If Katsuki had been a day later, he might have been saying it to another man.

For now, he leaves, the scent of evergreen on his scarf.

He wonders why it makes him smile the whole walk to the Chief's hut.

Izuku butts his head forward into Katsuki's palm, not shaking off his touch. "Sorry."

"Eh, they'll get over it. And I'll swing by tomorrow to shoo away Bird Boy." Forcing his touch away, Katsuki turns and moves to the doorway. "I hope you know what you're doing, Freckles."

Its weird, wanting to protect AND devour the cute omega.

But Katsuki is not some pathetic predator or alpha that can't manage his urges, no matter how tempting the dish.

So he reaches out, ruffling the ram's curls before petting one horn. "The village is gonna freak tomorrow."

For the first time since he was a pup, Katsuki remembers the little ram is still considered prey. He just never thinks of Freckles that way.

Because if he did when holding him down during spars, or letting Izuku scratch his flock itch by snuggling into him afterward, he might...

Is it because Bird Boy's too scared? Did he try? Maybe Izuku head-butted him, since that's his favorite thing to do?

Would Katsuki get the same treatment if he leaned down-

"Kacchan?" When Katsuki focuses back on the omega, he pauses.

Soft face. Round eyes. Tempting neck.

"Kay."

Then, there's a pause. What do people do after agreeing to sabotage a wedding for a fake courting (that, somehow, doesn't FEEL fake)?

Katsuki's eyes flicker down, catch Izuku's teeth slowly grabbing his own lower lip.

'I've never even kissed Rody!' Izuku said earlier.

Suddenly, the forge feels REALLY hot. Katsuki needs some air, or space, or... fuck, he's not sure.

So he quickly blurts, "I've gotta go ruin your wedding."

"R-Right!" Startled, Izuku finally lets go, though Katsuki's arms around him keep him close. "You should... do that."

Katsuki freezes, which makes Izuku tense, too. They stare at each other, eyes wide, neither seeming to know what to do.

Because Katsuki didn't mean that. Or, he didn't THINK he did? But, now that it's out there, it feels... like maybe Freckles just says the quiet part out loud.

Izuku looks up from his chest with a mix of surprise and embarrassment over red cheeks.

"Hah?"

"You said anyone else." The stomping happens again, though he doubts its aggression. Which means its gotta be... excitement? "Kacchan, does that mean you've thought of mating... me?"

"Shut up. Not like I was gonna mate anyone else in the village."

He tries to think of how he's going to explain the short notice to the chief, though he's pretty sure their leader has a soft spot for Freckles-

"...anyone else?" The question cuts off his thoughts, looking down.

Except when he goes to pull away, an awful noise comes from the ram before yanking Katsuki close again, head-butting his chest.

"Oi, I gotta-"

"I'm sorry," comes from the tired omega, who probably has been searching for another way to get around the situation he put himself in.

'Because he doesn't love him'. Katsuki thinks, tugging Izuku closer before squeezing him.

"Then I better go wake up Chief Toshi with my challenge," he says, like he doesn't have a choice. From how his wolf is already restless with the urge to scent him more, there really isn't.

It's well thought out. Then again, why is he surprised? The ram's intelligence is one big reason so many people try to catch his oblivious attention.

"You're gonna crush Bird Boy's heart." Not that Katsuki really cares.

Izuku stays silent for a moment. "It's better this way."

"You courting me, even past my twenty-first birthday, will make the villagers feel more at ease about working with me. You can take years to 'choose' if we'll mate. And since wolves have the highest standings in the village, no other alpha would be able to challenge you for me."

Izuku doesn't lift his head, choosing to bury it into Katsuki's chest before nodding. He's normally a larger-than-life spirit that fills the blacksmith space with his warmth and positive aura.

But in the moment, Katsuki feels the dread and relief coating the compact frame.

Over the years, Katsuki learns to hate this shitty system, and how it oppresses people like his dad, Sparky, and Izuku.

But now, he could almost forgive his ancestors for this one loophole.

"And you want me to step in and halt the wedding with a courting offer?" Katsuki asks.

"Rody's a beta."

"A dumbass beta."

"Kacchan." Still, the bleat he adds afterwards doesn't hide he's not REALLY upset. "If an alpha challenges the claim of an omega or beta, and the claimed mate is comfortable with the alpha offering, the alpha has standing to court first."

The 'again' scrunches Katsuki's nose, leaning back down to rub his unreasonable annoyance along Izuku's ear. "If you HAD to say yes, then why are you upset I wasn't here to stop it?"

Because he's totally okay with crashing a wedding if it means never seeing the omega cry again.

But strong fingers clutch ‌Katsuki's thick scarf, keeping their bodies close. "If I don't get mated by my twenty-first birthday, people will see me as defective. And if they stop buying my weapons, I won't be able to care for mom. So when Rody asked again, I had to say yes."

So as he tries to calm his longest friend with a familiar scent, Katsuki finally lets Freckles lead the conversation. "Why did you need me here for my birthday?"

"So you could help me think of how to stop the wedding."

"Stop the-what?" The whiplash almost makes him pull away.

It's another thing Katsuki shouldn't do. Or maybe he won't be allowed to tomorrow, since the omega (now trembling in the arms Katsuki wraps around him) will wear a beta's mark and scent tomorrow.

But this is Izuku. And Katsuki will always care more about him than tradition.

"Okay," Katsuki says, slow in his return approach back to the omega nervously grooming himself. "I should have been here for my birthday."

"Yes," is the mumbled answer, Izuku relaxing when Katsuki crowds close enough to nudge his nose against the other's soft jaw, scenting him.

'Why is he stuck on that?' Katsuki thinks, brows furrowed as Izuku tries to smooth out the hair around his horns. It's a tic he only does when he's scared.

Of... Katsuki? He can't tell.

That thought makes Katsuki's anger take a back seat. His ram's comfort is his only focus.

Obviously, Freckles is upset. The glare behind the wet lashes proves that Katsuki's crossed a line.

But the trembling lips, the rosy nose, and his curled shoulders also scream at Katsuki to soothe the little ram.

"I thought you'd be home for your birthday," Izuku sniffles.

"You dumb wolf!" Suddenly, the ram lifts his head, slamming forward to headbutt Katsuki.

The burst of unexpected pain drags out a yelp, making him step back to avoid another attack.

"What the FUCK-" Before he finishes his snarl, Katsuki looks up and freezes.

Izuku's crying.

Not hearing any denial claws at something awful in his chest, and he gets close enough to slam his own hand next to the scarred one, fingers accidentally crossing as he growls close to the hidden face.

"Tell me, Izuku. I wanna hear it from your damn mouth. Tell me you love-"

But Katsuki isn't known for being kind, so he stalks forward, a rumble under his pointed accusations.

"Did the omega lamb fall head over hoof for a damn carrier pigeon? Are you dreaming of being stuffed with gremlins and glowing with your little flock?"

Izuku bows his head.
