Disappointed (but not entirely surprised) this #cartoon didn't find a home. #doglife #dogs #business

So it’s particular phrases associated with, for instance, praise of children that are problematic. That horrible history of infantilisation. Thank you — that’s helpful. I will share this to students.

This is well expressed and thoughtful by any standards. The political classes rarely speak so well. I’m an English teacher and I would like to be able to point out precise and impactful uses of language wherever I see them. How sad that the history of racist condescension means I can’t.

That’s quite … extreme. The only film of his I enjoyed unreservedly in the cinema, but haven’t seen since, is Strictly Ballroom.

Toby Maguire literally looking in on himself at a party while his narrator’s voice tells us he’s looking in at himself at a party (apologies, F Scott Fitzgerald) is one of the worst things I’ve seen at the cinema.

I’ve heard it gets better after a shaky start; if I hear this confirmed, I’ll go!

I’m not a fan of his no-subtext style, but hoped that wouldn’t matter in a concert film (however contrived the concert element is).

Just heard Mark Kermode’s review of EPiC and he used the dreaded word “montage”. That’s what made Luhrmann’s biopic unbearable to me (I know I’m an outlier on this). I want to know that there are uninterrupted performances of the songs before I go to see this in the cinema.

Not seen Only Yesterday yet but love the rest of these. I was bowled over by how good The Boy and the Heron was.

I can only really recommend Prey, which works entirely on its own terms as a very nifty historical SF fantasy adventure film.

Wife agrees to watch Predator Badlands with me after assurances that it’s thought to be one of the better Predator films. Then it begins with prolonged fight between indistinguishable characters we don’t yet give a shit about. I backtrack and now we’re watching Studio Ghibli’s Arrietty.

I read a suggestion once that she would have been perfect in the Juliet Mills role in Billy Wilder’s Avanti! #TheFilmCrowd

A Tory-Reform coalition — should such a thing be viable to form a majority — would happen without the slightest friction. It’s impossible to imagine this version of the Labour Party working with either the Greens or the Lib Dems.

I will cheer as loudly when Starmer resigns (surely a matter of months at most) as I did when Johnson went. The Mandelson fiasco should’ve finished him already.

Yeah, very little comparison. And what they choose to do with their personal wealth is very different. They clearly have hugely different senses of self.

Dirty Business - the sewage scandal docu-drama - on C4 is staggering TV. Not only the cold rage of it, and the depiction of banal corporate evil, but the production methods and performances. Poo Chernobyl.

Racism and staffing issues factors in 'failing' maternity care, report finds
The interim report has identified problems
Under Wes Streeting, the NHS has ascended to the pinnacle of not having enough staff to do its job properly, and not having enough jobs for newly-trained staff.
This is a literal "you could wave a magic wand" problem, and the magic wand is money.
