One of the all time great backhanded love songs! They are mostly by Billy Joel. Except for “Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now” and “You Don’t Have to be a Star to be in my Show”

this is like the least thing, but I find the jeans so infuriating. I feel like it would help us tremendously as a country if any agent of state power operating domestically was obliged to wear unflattering polyester uniform pants.

quote on a dark blue and purple background from Sudip S. Parikh, CEO of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), criticizing proposed cuts to science funding in the FY26 U.S. federal budget. The quote reads:

“If enacted, the FY26 budget request would end America’s global scientific leadership. The cuts to science would imperil our nation’s future health, security and prosperity. This budget proposal stands in stark contrast to the President’s call for a renewed commitment to American scientific leadership. Congress has demonstrated a bipartisan commitment to investment in research and must do so again to answer the President’s call.”
The quote is attributed to Sudip S. Parikh, CEO of AAAS and Executive Publisher of the Science family of journals. The AAAS logo appears at the bottom right.

I don't think anyone outside of universities, pharma and biotech, independent research institutions have any idea of what is happening right now. If you haven't sounded the alarm among your friends, family and colleagues, now is the time to do it.

That’s the thing. Or one of the things, anyway. You can’t preach minimalism or austerity whilst perched upon a gold throne. I mean you can, but you will lack credibility.

And yes by throne I mean toilet

American Panopticon The Trump administration is pooling data on Americans. Experts fear what comes next.

If there’s one thing I’ve taken away from reporting on the current DOGE collection of govt data, it is that the people who’ve previously spent their careers carefully handling this information believe there is almost no limit to how it could be abused (gift link) www.theatlantic.com/technology/a...

This isn't The Art of the Deal.
It's insider trading with a bad comb-over.

Step 1: Tank the Market, Scare the Non-Millionaires
Step 2: Let the Aristocrats Feast
Step 3: Flip, but say ‘Winning’
Step 4: Pretend None of This Ever Happened & Get Your Media Dregs To Do The Same

Rinse, Enrich, Repeat.

Trump administration targets billions in funding to Harvard An antisemitism task force will review $8.7 billion in multiyear grants and $255 million in contracts to the university and its affiliates.

Neo-Nazis and white supremacists using a feigned interest in combatting anti-Semitism as a way to suppress freedom of speech and expression in the US is as nauseating as it is totally on brand for this administration. But don't be numbed to it. Worse is coming. www.washingtonpost.com/education/20...

Things that are actually disrespectful:

1. Kidnapping green card holders
2. Deporting people without due process
3. Storming the US Capitol building and killing/injuring cops in the process

I’ve got more suggestions if anyone needs them.

Today #NIH is terminating more than $250 million in funding—including more than 400 grants—to Columbia University following directives from the Trump Administration’s Joint Task Force to Combat Anti-Semitism. The cancellations are due to Columbia University’s continued inaction in the face of persistent harassment of Jewish students.

It needs to be repeated over and over: accusations of antisemitism are going to be one of the primary weapons of the fascists to seize power.

They are trying to weaponize the power of these accusations while simultaneously making Jews appear to be the orchestrators of their power grabs.

Right now there is clear, overwhelming opposition to Mahmoud Khalil’s abduction across the moderate, liberal, progressive & left spectrum. This kind of loud unity is what authoritarians are afraid of. To keep it up we need every institution & public leader to join the chorus.
