However, there is a whiff of Arms Race about the place..pre-WW1 more so perhaps? Coupled with a sense of 'nostalgia' across the liberal democracies for strong man governments and scare mongering...its hard not to fear the atmosphere of the 1930s. We need to face this and protect our democracies.

Catherine may need the counsel of media savvy advisors but also needs to assure and show her faithful voters that she is capable of staying true to her principles while delivering the message with the necessary nuance and diplomacy (which is a requirement of the role)

This analysis, language and tone doesn't offer much hope for a mature and principled end to this war. Tantrums, shouting, foot stomping and breath holding are undignified and unbecoming of the leader of a country that so many hold in high regard. This is deeply depressing.

I wonder if the evolutionary process and our consciousness of it requires us to be the best that we can be. Is that a purpose? The scientific method and rigorous thinking is underpinned by and evolved from earlier albeit rudimentary ideas. might be prudent to be careful throwing out the bathwater

clever marketing..hope its ethically sourced..looks like its sold in church settings so unlikely to offend 'casual shoppers'. Good humoured Catholics (lapsed or otherwise) will recognise the commercialisation element and will price that into their morning meditation over a freshly brewed cup of java

The decision by #dcc to give permission for the redevelopment of a rare cultural landmark #usshersisland is a sign that the city of #dublin is administered by people who have no love for it. Heritage and the cultural life of citizens as always plays second to mammon. #buyitforthepeople #savethedead

Is anyone disturbed by the dehumanised and nightmarish images from El Salvador? Like mad max meets blade runner. Is this typical of South America (i dont think so) and if not why is El Salvador in need of such a brutal regime?

its origins are authentic, its relevance to the much of the diaspora acknowledged, its story of migration, slavery and trafficking still alarmingly relevant If we can ignore the crass commercialisation there's still a valuable story for us to share with the world

beacon of hope to those escaping poverty and tyranny. The Irish were not all were pillars of the community but the majority (as with most migrant people now) became net contributors to their new home. Amidst the corporate schmoozing theres room this year for such a speech. #patricksday #migration

Imagine the power of a speech somewhere near the WH on patricks day which (in the spirit of the earlier handover of the symbolic plant) highlighted the interdependence of people, the generosity and common humanity of native people (choctaw) and the inspiring role the US played as safe haven and

Or maybe for non delivery of slaintecare, long waits for kids surgery, the nightmare of a+e, disability services and no coherent strategy for the elderly, access to GPs and the perceived runaway project that is the childrens hospital. Few would've envied him the job but on his watch so...?

Elections tell us somethiing about our neighbours, their view of competence, their priorities and their appetite for change. We may be disappointed or happy in a shared view but we get to make choices every 5 years and that hard won right is to be celebrated and fought for #ge24 #ireland #voting

In light of more worrying news for print, see #observer im reminded of the light generated by #hibernia in ireland during some dark days. An outlet for some excellent journalism, cultural expression and some radical ideas. Remember this was 1970s ireland.
