Losers with power become the most dangerous kind.

Pope Francis chose that name after Saint Francis of Assisi, the barefoot radical who gave up his wealth to live among lepers, animals, & the poor. A man who didn’t see nature as a resource, but as “a mirror of God.” In a world where profit trumps life, that name was a provocation.

Ahead of Trump’s “tariff day” April 2, let me reiterate a basic fact.

Value added tax systems do not distort trade.

European consumers pay VAT
US consumers pay sales taxes

End of story

A 🧵to make this painfully obvious if the above is not clear 1/

That was not my point - it was that commentators have largely misinterpreted the result of the US elections as a swing to Trumpism, rather than a failure of the Dems to mobilise the anti-Trump majority - precisely because of their neglect of key issues for working people and disadvantaged groups

Thank you Dr Helmuth. Millions agree with your views on the election. We need journals like Scientific American to defend the values of truth and objectivity in the face of all that subverts them. Enjoy the break but come back fighting!.
