Strolling by HMS Belfast & saw a man with a splendid hawk on his arm. Had to ask and the man said the hawk was on his way to work. & what line of work was this hawk engaged in? I enquired.

'He's in pigeon control.'

I've been working on researching my other half's geneaology and when he gets home I've got to break it to him one of his ancestors was taken to court for stabbing a man in the hand after an argument about pigeons.

You don't need to dial a number, you just pick up the receiver and say something awkward like 'hello, I'm at Fenham Hill, is it safe to cross?' and a kindly, mysterious voice tells you it's safe to cross, like you're in the middle of some questing computer game.

Downloading our photos from our St. Cuthbert's Way walk and laughing at this pic my other half took of me. On the final leg to Lindisfarne, you have to cross a highspeed railway line. There's no bridge or underpass so you have to call a signalman from this little booth and get the OK to cross.

It's a choice, for sure...

Just got this out of the library. Having read The Corner That Held Them, I have to confess this cover was a bit of a surprise.

Just home from a week hiking St Cutbert's Way. Eyeballs fizzing with all the beautiful scenery but it was the little history museum en route that made me smile most of all.
