Under Construction

It’s better than Strangeways Here We Come, in my opinion. Your Arsenal and especially Vauxhall and were then better

With The Fall, something like Spectre versus Rector contains, off the top of my head, reference to M.R.James, Arthur Machen, H.P. Lovecraft, maybe Colin Wilson. So many Fall songs are an um, smorgasbord of references that it’s difficult to know where to start. Julian is Cope perhaps easier ?

Does classism here refer to social class? Apologies but I can’t help but see your reported comment as problematic

β€˜It launched a million fantasies’: the greatest ever TV romances From sparks flying during The OC’s Spider-Man snog to love stories so powerful they make you weep, Guardian writers pick the television couples whose tales never fail to make hearts pound

Greatest TV love affairs? How about those between Guardian TV writers and endless listicles, at the expense of writing properly informed cultural criticism?

From BrontΓ« to Ballard, Orwell to Okri: the best songs inspired by literature – ranked! As Kate Bush’s Wuthering Heights gets a boost from a new film adaptation, we survey the surprising, seditious and sensual ways in which prose has influenced pop

As good as The Sensual World or Bug Powder Dust are, and as much as he’s persona non grata today, Morrissey’s take on Brighton Rock, Now My Heart is Full is the finest lit-inspired song I know

David Byrne is playing Summer Sonic. Mid-August, so 35Β° +, and exorbitant festival ticket prices. But never having seen Talking Heads or the American Utopia tour are great regrets of mine.

@barryglendenning.bsky.social I was impressed by your correction of Max Rushden’s use of the standard Guardian term β€˜capture’ to describe what happened to Madura and his wife. I’m guessing there must be a lot of disquiet among staff over the Guardian’s adoption of it and good to see pushback

I thought Farke was a dead man walking before the Man City game and if he had been sacked then I’d just have shrugged. Turns out he’s a previously undiscovered tactical mastermind. Sorry, Daniel. ‬

I think I see what you mean: we’ve lucked into/been forced into an effective way of playing because we weren’t able to sign the likes of Muniz and Wilson? Very possibly but the not-at-all-obvious tweaks Farke made during the L’pool game and for the Palace one show real tactical nous
