Happy Halloween!

If you fancy a trip to see something that really gets under your skin, then the new Yorgos Lanthimos film BUGONIA is out in UK cinemas today. I saw it a few weeks ago at the London Film Festival and have thought about it a lot since.

Creepy in all kinds of ways

If anyone wants to watch the beautiful new film HEDDA, which I show up in very briefly, it's now available worldwide on Amazon Prime Video.

I got to help make a big movie with an amazing director, incredible lead actress and lovely company.

That was a dream of mine, once.

❀️ x

Finally got round to watching the recent film adaptation of THE LONG WALK, which is on Prime Video now. I read the short story so many years ago, and its vision of a dark and nihilistic future seemed fanciful. Now I'm not so sure. Anyway, it's a good metaphor for where we are

My current guilty pleasure TV is the Mark Ruffalo series TASK on Prime Video. Like all good shows, it pretends to be about one thing (an FBI agent investigating home invasions) but is really about another thing (fatherhood, faith, and grief). Depressing and uplifting. Both.

London Film Festival came to a close yesterday with 100 NIGHTS OF HERO, a very intriguing adaptation of a graphic novel version of One Thousand and One Nights. Historical fantasy is always a little fruity, but this has an interesting feminist spin and some startling visuals

Thoroughly enjoyed the new film PILLION at the London Film Festival, a kind of serious romantic comedy that skirts around the BDSM fetish scene, and does so with respect and maturity. Refreshing to see kinks being treated normally and placed within a traditional romantic setting

Enjoyed the Richard Linklater experimental movie NOUVELLE VAGUE at the London Film Festival, about the making of the classic film Breathless in 1959. Shot in black and white, with no stars, in French and with a 4:3 aspect ratio, can't see it finding a huge audience but it's fun

Enjoyed the new Lynne Ramsay movie DIE MY LOVE at the London Film Festival last night, with a mesmerising Jennifer Lawrence playing a mother losing her grasp on reality while suffering postpartum depression. Funnier than it sounds, but also bleak and harrowing and beautiful

Also thoroughly enjoyed the new Kelly Reichardt film THE MASTERMIND at the London Film Festival, which is technically a heist movie, but instead of spectacular planning and execution it focuses on the banal uselessness of ordinary people. Fun for slowcore nerds like myself

Lovely visualisation of the 99 Per Cent Invisible podcast about Grand Theft Hamlet and the history of Machinima. Really well-written and edited, featuring some audio interviews from Sam and Pinny and some other guy:

Caught one of the two new Richard Linklater films at the London Film Festival last night - BLUE MOON, a sad and beautiful tribute to one of the entertainment industry's forgotten people, Lorenz Hart. It's about not being quite cool enough, or successful enough. Obviously haunting

Caught the amazing new Park Chan-wook film NO OTHER CHOICE at the London Film Festival last night, another brilliant Korean film which, like Parasite a few years back, skewers what modern late-capitalist society is doing to us all. Just watch anything made in Korea lately tbh

Enjoyed the new Bradley Cooper film IS THIS THING ON? at the London Film Festival last night, about a standup comedian going through an amicable divorce. Bizarrely based on the life of John Bishop, who looked as baffled by the whole thing as anyone

Saw another absolute belter of a film this afternoon called SENTIMENTAL VALUE, a Norwegian comedy drama about making a film about your own family. Joachim Trier seems to be an expert in walking that fine line between hilarious and excruciating. Took a lot of mental notes...

Saw the amazing new Iranian film IT WAS JUST AN ACCIDENT at the London Film Festival today, an intense thriller about an innocuous mistake escalating into increasingly frantic consequences. It's really a vehicle to expose the absurdities of modern Iranian society, brilliantly so

Good god, I watched HAMNET at the London Film Festival today. A brilliant adaptation of a great book, about Mr and Mrs Shakespeare dealing with the death of their son. It portrays shattering grief and somehow helps you process it. The whole cinema was weeping. Astonishing stuff

Enjoyed the new Yorgos Lanthimos film BUGONIA at the London Film Festival last night, with Emma Stone playing a high-powered CEO who gets kidnapped by two men who think she's an alien. It has (mostly grim) things to say about the state of the world and where we get information

Enjoyed the surprise film at the London Film Festival last night, which was a genuine surprise as I knew nothing about it - Daniel Roher's first fictional film TUNER, starring Leo Woodall as a piano tuner with acute hearing who gets caught up in criminal safe-cracking. Fun stuff

Great kick-off to the London Film Festival last night with the new Knives Out film WAKE UP DEAD MAN. Another intricate, clockwork puzzle script that manages to skirt deeper themes about death while still being political and funny. Please make a fourth one of these @rianjohnson.bsky.social
