I read an early draft of By Any Other Name while at the beach with my family. I remember the moment I first encountered Shakespeare in the text. I was not happy: “This [man] was slighter, with a receding hairline and a weak chin badly camouflaged by a dark beard” (144). Emilia immediately remembers reading one of his very bad plays as Hunsdon’s companion. At the bar, Shakespeare claims, “I, too, will write for the stage” and Emilia thinks “Badly” (144). When reading this exchange, I thought: “Jodi, you don’t have to be so mean about it.” Quickly, though, I realized that this is exactly the sentiment built by Shakespeareans Picoult wanted to poke at—the belief that Shakespeare is a god beyond reproach.

I got up early & wrote 750 words of my article on working with @jodipicoult.bsky.social on her book, By Any Other Name. it feels good to be writing again.

Hi. I know there’s a lot of crap going on but book bans are still happening. Get angry.

FREE education - both trades and college.

Not sure where you are based but in the US right now things feel quite skewed.

And I also think that critical thinking is anathema to the right wing. It’s why they are attacking universities and free speech. Much easier to control a populace of sheep that can be herded. / 2.

I would agree with both statements. But in the US there is a difference between arbitrary limits (“you’re not grieving the right way for a man I revered and you didn’t!”) and intelligent limits (murder is a crime, common sense gun reform is necessary). /1

Absolutely. But if the power to even make a choice is restricted, that’s an erosion of freedom. And those who make the choice to erode other’s choices definitely have to face responsibility for those actions.

common sense gun reform FOREVER. Wrote a whole book about it. :)

They said they owned my books and didn’t want to sell them bc then others could read them.

They were readers who said they would never read me again and had burned my books so others could not read them either.

I had multiple readers this week tell me they burned my books.
