I definitely disagree on it not belonging as part of the Robot Romance trilogy though, as even though it plays into (and plays up, in a lot of cases) many 70s mecha tropes, I think you can still clearly see the building blocks for Voltes and later Daimos within Combattler's standout episodes.

Huh, very different take on it from me, though I went into Combattler with my only other 70s anime being Gundam, and I loved it. I definitely agree that the second half is far weaker than the first half, but the stand out episodes were enough to keep me engaged in the mediocrity.

I'm still very surprised Combattler is that low, any particular reason?

I agree that there's probably room to talk about how SRW can dip into "corporate crossover"-ism, especially with the way some fans treat the franchise, but I think it largely escapes that criticism because the franchise was created for the love of the game and does its best to maintain that spirit.

Not to say that every single mecha I've watched BECAUSE of SRW is good, but it got me into GUNxSWORD, Code Geass, Combattler/Robot Romance, Mazinger, and created an interest in stuff I haven't even gotten to yet, like the Braves series, Dunbine, L-Gaim, and so on.

I was already hitting my "mecha era" when SRW30 was coming out, but it was what got me to start branching out and watching shows I hadn't seen before that I would have had no interest in otherwise, and generally allowing me to be more open to what this genre has to offer.
