Three tile image with two images in top row. Top row: In the centre is an elliptical galaxy, seen as an oval-shaped glow around a small bright core. Around this is wrapped a broad band of light, appearing like a spiral galaxy stretched and warped into a ring, with bright blue lines drawn through it where the spiral arms have been stretched into circles. A few distant objects are visible around the ring on a black background. The image has been annotated to point out the foreground galaxy as well as the background spiral. In the bottom row: Diagram showing the JWST on one side with light being focused into it from a distant galaxy, via an intermediate galaxy. The Galaxy appears as a ring as light scattered in all directions is delivered to the focal point.
Updated explainer diagram version!
Still can't get over the structures we see in this lens. Physics allows us to see around corners!

Elliptical galaxy with an oval shape and yellow green glow. Around this is a warped spiral galaxy stretched into a ring. The background is black with a few distant objects.
Fake space image? Nope! The latest JWST image shows a phenomenon called an Einstein Ring. You are looking at 2 galaxiesβan elliptical galaxy closer to us sits at the center, and a more distant spiral galaxy is warped around it. This is a type of gravitational lensing. (1/3)

Unfortunately the planet is currently hidden in the glare of the Sun, but Alan Friedman compiled a great image sequence of a similar vanishing in 2009. π§ͺπ
