1. Think about the setting. It doesn't always have to be dragons or dungeons. Most GM's won't let you play as a dungeon anyway. π
2. Pick an Archetype from that setting. Old West? Gunslinger or Outlaw. Sci-fi? Space Ranger or Merc. Etc.
3. Find something weird/unique about them and get wacky. π

Anything by John Scalzi but most of all, the hilarious parody "excerpt" from The Shadow War of the Night Dragons: Book One - The Dead City".

Make them all seem ominous or eccentric but harmless to throw the PC's off the trail from the real threat: an innocuous background animal. Like a horse that was with them the whole time. Then have it massacre the NPC's the PC's are afraid to interact with.

Dice Company's Small Embers is five long-time friends talking smack at each other while playing D&D and turning it into an extraordinary adventure series wrapped inside a Narrative Actual Play Podcast of high audio quality.

It should be noted that DCP is 5 lads from the UK but it's high-quality, extremely entertaining, often hilarious, and regularly has guest players (including females). They've set the bar quite high.

I appreciate your opinion. Fortunately, that is not something I have actually said, only that I am less likely to try it out vs podcasts that have a more diverse cast because that is my preference.

I think people of all walks have different perspectives to offer and their voices should be heard when possible. So in that way, it does matter at least as a preference rather than a rule.

Pushing forward too quickly. I may not have had enough coffee or am still processing what just happened. Give me a moment to interject a quip, riff on another player's thing, or go full chaos monkey before changing the scene. If I have to ask for a rewind, slow down.

In @dicecompany.bsky.social 's Small Embers podcast, story threads built up over 86 prior chapters hit like an atomic freight train of revelations in the latest episode. Ch. 87 is a stunning, epic, mind-blowing payoff well worth the price of admission & then some. No cap. Is that still a thing? π

Bad voices: If your voice is cracking, fill them in with epoxy and come back later.
Bad representation: If it's a sausagefest, I'm 50% less likely to try it. Half again if everyone is the same ethnicity.
