The Auric Swords aren't stoic warriors, dour fanatics or roguish barbarians: they're fucking bastards. You want their help, you better pay for it. Their mercenary nature gives them a bad habit to perform "strategic retreats" when things start looking too hopeless for their tastes, which is often.

I'm the opposite: I like the idea of SM Landsknechts way more than Landsknecht Guard, because what appeals to me is having a Space Marine Chapter that is the most un-Space Marine-like imaginable.

From what I've heard, the difference in the way abuse works in right-wing spaces vs. left-wing spaces is that in the former abusers will abuse the power imbalance to get their way while in the latter will deny there's a power imbalance in the first place.

Yeah, but it's not foolproof, or the SoS would be redundant. Like yeah, common warp fuckery has little effect on them, but they're still susceptible to like, getting Smited in the face. A psyker of the level of a Grey Knight would actually pose a danger to a Custodian (though not a mortal one).

On the other hand, this one could kinda fits into your "The Emperor as a trickster god" headcanon, because "I am going to tell a bunch of psyker dudes to come fight my Blank warrior ladies and my night-invincible golden bodyguards" honestly feels like a bit if taken seriously.

They *can* be beaten, but not by 1000 dudes whose only advantage against them is being powerful psykers, which is entirely nullified by the very existence of the Sisters of Silence. Hell, even without SoS, the very fact that *Custodes* would have a large numerical advantage makes this a non-starter.

Only way it works if it's part of some 15D chess plan by Big E to somehow gain something from having the entire Grey Knights Chapter do suicide by Custodians.

I will note that the blueberries' popularity is mainly tied to them being the default flavor of the most popular faction in the game. As such, a lot of their fans tend to be newbies or dilettantes, and their popularity drops dramatically if you get into the more committed part of the fandom.

Rule of thumb is that the 5 most popular Chapters have more or less always been the Ultramarines and the 4 major non-Codex compliant Chapters (Space Wolves, Black Templars, Blood Angels and Dark Angels).

Nah, Space Wolves have always been one of the most popular Space Marines Chapters. If we go by subreddit numbers for example (an imperfect data point, but a data point nonetheless), Space Wolves have the second largest of the Chapters subreddit after the Blood Angels, which tracks honestly.

The thing is that doing Battle Reports takes an absolutely ridiculous amount of time and energy, creating a barrier to entry; the reason why 40k Lore Youtube are such a nest of reactionary scum is specifically because it is full of bottom-feeders.
