These are interesting times for the rule of law, but we are trying to "stay in our own lane" and limit comments to bikes.

@bikeleague.org tells us that USDOT now claims that Bike lanes are "hostile" to cars & β€œno longer in the public interest”

Like those pesky people on bicycles, those rocks obviously came out of nowhere.

Wait, what people on bicycles?

Columbus Ohio scary street as depicted in its Vision Zero action plan

Seeing this image from VisionZeroNetwork.org made me wonder if it was the street I rode into to work on this morning.

It's not, it's from Ohio. Does it look too familiar to you?

We can do better than this... safer streets help everyone!

Head starts are nice, but how much safer would we be if cars did not get a green light if it conflicts with a walk light?

Why is this not an option? Especially for walk lights that don’t automatically cycle and only turn green with a beg button.

Takeaway- Talk is cheap and facts are optional. Actually improving safety requires considering the factual root causes of dangers and takes real money to build or rebuild better.

The Trump administration is implementing funds for safety grants at about ten percent of the speed of the previous administration - Transportation For America The Trump administration talks a big game about streamlining requirements and reviews. Speed is not everything, but when we evaluate the rates of getting actual dollars out the door and into real proj...

More about the Federal Department of Transportation's political statements and funding of safety projects in the article below by Transportation for America.

Spoiler Alert- funding of safety-related grants is about 90% less now than under the previous administration.

Should transportation planning prioritize safety over political statements?

Yes.

AND… cutting funding while making statements about rainbow crosswalks rather than the lack of marked crosswalks and other safety infrastructure is not the way to do that.

Here's a 15 minute overview of the science of street safety by Jesse Singer, author of "There Are No Accidents."

If you don't have 15 minutes, start at 8:41 where she uses the hierarchy of controls to explain why most of what we do in the US is the least effective way to increase safety.

Washington may soon pass a presumed liability law for drivers involved in crashes with people walking or rolling…

Meanwhile in Florida, β€œAnd so if you drive off and you hit one of these people, that's their fault for impinging on you."

I don’t expect cameras at every marked crosswalk, but starting by schools makes sense to me.

That’s why we should have cameras at marked crosswalks. Automated enforcement with fines based upon car value, information the state already has.

I noticed that too. Mayor Harrell is missing the essence of Vision Zero.

The most effective way to increase safety is to eliminate dangers, not by using administrative controls like policing. We need safer infrastructure.

How about marked crosswalks? With cameras off until someone is about to enter the street.

Protect people and privacy.

Low-stress roads and bike lanes improve safety, not just comfort Low stress roads make biking more comfortable, especially for people who are more risk-averse. But do they make biking safer? A new study suggests they do, countering concerns from some transportation...

A new study refutes the current US DOT's purported concern that adding bike lanes might lure people into unsafe conditions.

Bike Lanes make streets safer; more general-use lanes, higher traffic volumes, and higher speed limits make them more dangerous.

Separated Bike Lanes Means Safer Streets, Study Says β€” Streetsblog USA Cities that build protected lanes for cyclists end up with safer roads for people on bikesΒ and people in cars and on foot, a new studyΒ of 12 large metropolises revealed Wednesday.

Never forget, a 13-year study found that protected bike-lanes led to a drastic decline in fatalities for all road users.

ALL ROAD USERS.

And painted bike-lanes? No safety improvement at all.

For sharrows, it’s actually safer to NOT have them.

We used to say β€œDon’t shoot the messenger” but with this administration it’s a bigger problem-

β€œDon’t destroy the rule of law.”

Trump has long used our legal system as a weapon while attacking every part of it, including lawyers, judges & journalists who report facts.

Thats not right.
