Ozu loved to play with the tensions between traditional domestic and the modern outside. Especially with the expanding capitalism of Japan in the 1950s. But mostly he loved day drinking. And I think that was the secret sauce.

Sweet Smell of Success is one of those perfect movies. Everything is so sleazy and sinister with perfect
precision. The dialogue is spicy and there is so much in-between the sharp one liners. And don't get me started on the Wong-Howe cinematography. Just the way Lancaster is constantly in shadow
