Congratulations to Andra and Stephanie, master’s students in the lab, whose manuscript has been accepted for publication in Nature NPJ Viruses.

Their study reports the multiomic characterization of the largest bacteriophage maintained in culture.

The mcp and TerL protein still are so divergent. Especially mcp. We need to characterize them better. The unknown unknowns escape us still. Phage G still has 65% or 390 predicted proteins without known function.

I would love to do a YouTube show with you on stromatolites/microbialites, origin of life on Earth, and the search for life beyond Earth. Let me know if you game for such a show?

Embattled 'arsenic life' paper retracted by journal Science 15 years after publication A controversial 2010 study that suggested bacteria could grow using arsenic instead of phosphorus has been retracted by the research journal Science.

Glad Science retracted the Arsenic life paper.

Brilliant work by Rosie Redfield and others showed this study had issues 15 years ago.

Lots of secondary metabolite clusters, a plasmid that appears to be lost or transferred, weird ANI boundaries, something for everyone!

We were also lucky that our neighbors in the @raw937.bsky.social lab looked for prophage in these endosymbionts. Did not think they would be there but they are!

New from the Carter Lab!

Led by @bhuwanabbot.bsky.social, we sequenced almost twice as many complete genomes as were available for the endofungal Mycetohabitans genus.

Unsurprisingly, they are a little weird, giving us insight into endosymbiotic genome changes 🧬 🦠
