Do you think this is like how students who are used to authoritarian discipline struggle initially with restorative justice and choice? Or something bigger?

05.12.2025 05:18 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I read it! I just have never once taught in a school where every English teacher even felt comfortable teaching any poems and have often had to advocate for even including one in a unit. I have taught public speaking at every school. It seems like we have had very different experiences!

To do better w/poetry, check out the poetry club @marcusluther.bsky.social @thevogelman.bsky.social @heymrsbond.com ran this summer
@stevechiger.bsky.social has a list of great poems, levels, and lessons
I think there is a lot of nuance being lost here. Most teachers are actually kind of wary of poetry, which might end up being why lame haiku lessons happen in the first place. Poetry can be done exceptionally well and just as meaningfully as anything else (if not more). π #iteachenglish

For those who think every school and every teacher is following IEPs and that legal recourse for kids and families is expeditious, please attend to how many claims have been made historically and how few are being processed under this administration.

It sounds like you are doing a lot for a lot of students and also operating in a system where students can fail if they are not doing work, which makes sense.
The post I was responding to was about how students cannot fail if they are doing the work. I have seen students work very hard and fail.
I assure you I wasn't rushing to blame teachers. I apologize if it felt that way. I was saying that the claim about students not being able to fail is only true if the system is built that way.

02.12.2025 17:31 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Yes, and...it doesn't have a time limit. I do have to add posters to the iteachsocialstudies feed. It is a curated list. So, if someone posts to #sschat, but isn't on the feed, I try to catch it and add them. I don't think too many people have slipped through. If you notice any, feel free to tag me!
02.12.2025 17:31 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I know active posters are a small group, but several are using the πΊ and/or tag. The #iteach structure was set up when we arrived.

Thank you for sharing this.
It feels like a good reminder of how an expert using a support tool is different than a novice. You can use the tool to tweak your process. People with less expertise may use it to replace labor.
What is an example of what you mean by "democratic forms of school governance"? Like, at what level?

I have had a teacher tell a high school student I work with, "I could let you use your accommodation, but then I wouldn't be preparing you for the real world."
I think you misunderstood my comment. I offered an example of how some students fail even when completing every assignment in direct response to a post that said no students can fail if they complete every assignment. That is only true in some systems and for some students.
