A global coral phylogeny reveals resilience and vulnerability through deep time - Nature The most recent common ancestor of the stony coral Scleractinia dates to about 460 million years ago and was probably a solitary, heterotrophic and free-living organism.

This is an INCREDIBLE advance in our understanding of coral diversification. πŸͺΈπŸŽ‰ Fantastic new work led by @claudiavaga.bsky.social

A dead weevil with a fungus fruiting body growing out of it

Look. At. This. (!). A fungus spore landed on this weevil. Grew inside and caused it to climb to the top of this plant- while the fungus killed it. Consumed its body. Used that energy to shoot up a red fruiting body to release more spores. To zombify more weevils. A mind controlling killer fungus.

It doesn’t spit frequently, just when it thinks it sees food outside the water. Right now Legolas is only like an inch and a half (4cm) so it’s just a few drops of water. Will report back when it’s larger. Might need to build some kind of extension for the lid or splash guard if he gets rowdy 🀣

I’ve been waiting for years to play that is Scrabble ever since I took a parasitology class. Among other things, the term is used for how certain protists line up to mate. Unfortunately not in the Scrabble dictionary πŸ˜†

This is my 1st time catching my pet archer fish, Legolas, spitting on camera. Archerfish use modified jaw and tongue bones to fire a jet of water to knock down bugs from over hanging vegetation. Here Legolas is shooting down a fruit fly πŸͺ° 🐠πŸ§ͺ
