This is like Universal Basic Income: everyone knows bike lanes and parking restrictions make cities more liveable for everyone, drivers included. But 99% of politicians are too short-term and too damn chicken-shit to actually do it.

Possibly my favourite 'modern' chest tomb with an effigy. Lady Eleanor Methuen who died in 1958. She was an artist and the small stature at her feet is of her as a young painter. Corsham, Wiltshire.

Looking across the Presbytery crossing vaults at Salisbury Cathedral from the clerestory. The scissor arches are older than those at Wells Cathedral and may well have been the inspiration for them. On the roof can be seen the 'ghosts' of the original C13 murals and their C19 update.

The Fabulous West Window of Fairford church. The upper register contains a Resurrection view, the lower are primarily scenes of Judgement.

Palimpsest is such a lovely word. Here's an example in the C11 chapel of St Martin at Wareham, Dorset. Layers of decoration and script overlay each other on the Chancel arch. Gorgeous.

Who said that sermons cannot be colourful? A lovely pulpit from Torbryan in Devon made from reused C15 wood from the (intact) screen. #SundaySermons

I surrender, thatβs an excellent point. However, did Bell make a St Michael when St George was expected? Thank you Simon.

Fiona and I had that discussion at the time, however, both the church and www.warmemorialsonline.org.uk/memorial/294... suggests St George too. His other works are more 'conventional' with the cross emblazoned on his shield, for example the attached.

The Morning Chapel, known as such since the C18 when it was used for morning worship. Officially it is the North East Transept and was the home of two chapels - St Martin of Tours and St Catherine. Both are still in existence. The angels are on the western facing element of the former Choir screen.

High up on Dartmoor the enormous granite tower of Holy Trinity Torbryan stands to show that not only the church is there but also the village. An unearthly and phenonemal church well worth the trek to visit. #SteepleSaturday

Two C12 dragons pulling at the rosette above the door into Egleton church in Rutland. Is it fanciful to think this is sin pulling at the purity of the experience of God who is to be found in the church.

The lovely old chancel or possibly parclose screen cut down and placed at the west end of the church at Egleton, Rutland. Old wood has such a peaceful, restful quality.

This is not surprising at all, it's a pattern that crosses many immigrant groups. The pressure for assimilation leads to a kind of hyper-assimilation in which you demonstrate you belong by excluding others. It's not unlike some children's response to bullying: the price of entry is to bully others.

The medieval wooden font in the little church at Efenechtyd in North #Wales. It's a lovely thing: the colour of treacle and invitingly tactile. Exceedingly rare, it's survival is probably due to the fact that the great Welsh folklorist and antiquarian Elias Owen was vicar here.

A mish mash of ages, however, the 13th Century font at Oakham is rather lovely. The cover is C19 or possibly early C20 and the base is probably C13 remodelled.

Recently I visited Italy and determined to exercise my appalling Italian language skills on the local population. They felt differently because as soon as I opened my mouth they'd greet me in English and insist on speaking the language. They were being polite no doubt. Was I rude to submit to them?
