I’ve become convinced, in reading Marvel comics from this era, that Shooter had a real problem with women. Read his Dazzler graphic novel for more proof (or don’t, because it’s horrible). And I agree, having the Avengers called out for aiding and abetting Carol’s sexual assault was very cathartic.

It’s chilling. And the American Christians who have convinced themselves that Donald Trump shares their beliefs blows my mind.

I think his Alpha Flight is so…refreshing. I’ve never seen anyone write a team book like he does. It’s like he forgot he’s writing a team book and is almost doing an anthology with a very small cast of characters. It works for me but I know some people aren’t fans.

Tony Stark is worried that Cap won’t join the team, but he’s honestly lucky that Cap didn’t charter a plane to the Arctic Circle and throw himself back into the freezing waters.

Consider for a moment….you are in the 1940’s and then the next thing you know it’s 2002ish. You’ve never seen television and then someone turns it on and this is what you see.

I love his FF run (the first run to make me care about them) and his Alpha Flight. He also made me like Namor as well when he launched his series.

I know that Scott Kolins is sometimes described as cartoony, but his anatomy of Cap is dead on. And his feet in that first panel….its said that hands and feet are hard to draw, but Kolins nails it!

This Byrne right? There’s so much information being relayed just by everyone’s body language in this panel.

Scott Kolins uses one double page spread to show a fight scene that took 4-5 pages in Avengers #3 and it is gorgeous.

I find him to be one of the most fascinating people in comics and would love to have been able to interview him before he passed. I don’t know how that would have gone, but it would have been so exciting.

Yeah, there are a lot of problems with Shooter as a person, and sometimes as a writer, but he not only gave the Avengers direction but possibly saved Marvel in the late 70’s when it desperately needed a strong hand at the helm.

Or when a naked Hank Pym grew giant in Las Vegas and ruined (or improved) untold vacation photos?

All of these scenes from the best moments of the Avengers and no character chose The Crossing? Or when the oddest team of Avengers fought Super-Nova?

It took me a long time to even come to appreciate his art. Younger me didn’t get Kirby at all. Now I appreciate the sheer power that radiates from his drawings and his imagination that just never turned off, but yeah, his writing doesn’t work for me. New Gods is his only series I actually enjoy.

Also interesting that they chose, as one of the Avengers seminal moments, something that happened in Marvel Two-In-One and barely had anything to do with the Avengers.
