January 13 is Lithuania's 🇱🇹Freedom Defenders’ Day, a time to remember the incredible bravery of unarmed Lithuanians who stood against Soviet tanks in 1991. We sacrificed everything to protect our country’s freedom, now we remember why we are free.

The pressure from Moscow in 1991 was incredibly high. Support for #Lithuania 🇱🇹 came only from ordinary foreign people.

Moscow lies, manipulates, terrorizes and looks for an opportunity to wash everything with blood, while the West is afraid, doesn't understand and speaks ambiguously.

Like #Ukraine now, #Lithuania 🇱🇹was important to them only to extent that we interfered with maintaining a stable situation in Moscovy

I remember those events well.
Back then, both the US and the UK took a cautious stance on officially recognizing Lithuania’s independence because they didn’t want to escalate tensions with the Soviet Union.

Kazys Ladiga was a Lithuanian general and one of the first volunteer officers of the Lithuanian army. He commanded the "Vilkmergė Group" during Lithuanian-Soviet war in 1918. When soviets occupied Lithuania in 1940 he was sentenced to death and executed the same year.
