I dunno. I feel like I'm going crazy, being bpacc437 and complaining about other people's fanfic creeping me out. It's not a major problem or anything, the world will survive Lacenet being characterized wrong. Something about it just significantly rubs me the wrong way.

There's a popular story where Hornet just straight-up rapes Lace, and it's never acknowledged or seen as such. It was so rapey even I was put off by it, and I wrote Plushnet!

Again, I wouldn't have cared if it had been tagged and the author had an understanding they'd written SA - but they didn't.

Then though, I see *certain stories* that are trying to be in-canon, or at least being in line with the narrative and themes of Silksong, and failing horribly. They really don't seem to understand the themes of abuse and dominance in the game, when understanding them is vital to Lace and Hornet.

I suppose the difference is that I'm keenly aware I'm writing stuff outside the canon of the game when I make much of my NSFW, effectively using the broad strokes of HK and the characters to explore ideas I find hot, even though the stories are well outside the bounds of the actual game.

I'm in the strangest position with the Hollow Knight fandom right now. I have pretty significant beef with the way some fan stories have been writing Lace and Hornet, but can't say anything because, y'know, I've written much worse and will continue to.

Bpacc pre-Silksong: Lace is gonna be so fun to write! She has such strong bratty top energy!

Bpacc now: I'm pretty sure Sherma could make Lace cry within seconds of meeting her. He'd go "Hi White Maiden! You look so beautiful tonight!" and she'd just start sobbing.

It's genuinely so smart to have the entire thing (and the ARG which surrounds it) be so distant from the rest of the game, only to swing around with all the emotional force it can muster at the end of the DLC. It's such a fantastic clicking moment of "Oh, that's what this was all for."

Man, I was not expecting Nine Sols' secret Halloween level to emotionally beat my ass. The secret ending of it hasn't left my head in days.

I was happy to see it was very much an adaptation of Vineland. It's not a 1:1, but the themes, characters and emotions of the two resonate so much it may as well be one.

Are people really getting filtered so hard that their only recourse is to assume the game wants you to hate it? Because this isn't Kane and Lynch 2 making you listen to audio of torture on load screens, or Spec Ops the Line tricking you into bombing civilians. Silksong still wants you to have fun!

The consensus around Silksong that its a game that HATES you made by people who want you to SUFFER is so fucking weird, man. Silksong has its friction points and mean pranks on the player, but it ultimately wants you to have fun, and it wants you to succeed.

People get all surprised when I write SFW, which I sort of understand cause I have a reputation as being "the fuck up guy." But at the same time, I think most of my stuff has been a mix of plot and NSFW all the way back since Impure Love - some stories just tilt more in one direction than the other.

There's an observation Patricia Lockwood makes in No One Is Talking About This that your average online discourse sounds like word salad to anyone not also plugged in. It distances you from others. It's been like four years since that book has dropped and the problem has only gotten much more dire.

Bluesky has its issues and a userbase that can be too touchy, but Twitter is a petri dish designed to create the most insane people you have ever seen. The brain drain is real, and those who stayed aren't so much terminally online as they are stuck in the Wired from Serial Experiments Lain.

In case you're wondering how things are going back on Twitter, the site is in the middle of a multi-day discourse about if it is misogynistic to draw porn of Hornet Hollow Knight.

Average Bpacc Fanfiction Tags

You spend the first dozen hours of the game in the gutter with Pilgrims so destitute they have nothing but the rags on their back. Then you get to the Citadel where the average citizen was so rich they could drop 15 rosaries on a bench and it was no big deal. The game is saying something with that!

Take the rosary system. Is it ass that Act 1 is full of benches you have no real way to pay for/upgrades you can never hope to afford at that point? Yes.

You know who got fucked that way? Every Pilgrim which has tried the climb to the Citadel - and none of them had Hornet's survival skills.

I'm also surprised to see people say the game's difficulty is artificial or arbitrary. One of the things I found most impressive about the game is almost all of its sharp edges and friction enforced by the narrative. The difficulty is frequently being used to say something about the world or themes.

Catching up on The Discourse and some people are super overexaggerating how hostile and difficult Silksong is. I've seen people saying the game *wants* you to hate it, which is crazy. Some people got killed by a trapped bench once and started acting like they were playing Drakengard or Pathologic.

I thought it was pretty great! I didn't *love* it as much as the first game, but then again the first game has the benefit of living in my head for a decade now. It'll probably get there on a later re-play. Still a towering artistic achievement and a great expansion on the first game overall.
