Sometimes I feel like apologizing for my scholar-level knowledge of history, and especially of American history. We have people, many in my own generation, who don't grasp it or understand its beautiful poetry. The founders thought that that a well-designed system just might prove uplifting.

Trump is the Anti-Lincoln. The currents of American history reverse, and the Confederacy and its Northern doughface supporters are once again ascendant. 1859 wasn't so long ago, and the Taney Supreme Court of that era is now replaced by the Roberts Court, which is just as bad, if not worse.
