Cool, good news! This is a digest format ‘novel’ so it was really hard to judge if it’s a magazine ‘special’ or the full expanded text.

Now, the cross-dressing role is almost edgy. Two moments especially - Mother Riley moves into Dora Bryan’s room (they’re both servants), and puts up a poster of a Cocteau-like drawing of a muscleman, to make it more like home.

And an angry landlord earlier, loudly calls her a faggot. Ouch.

I picked up this edition, which I’m hoping is the full version of the novel.

Though Arthur Lucan as Mother Riley is still heavily dependent on his vaudeville routines, catchphrases, mannerisms and awful songs. Though his energy is admirable.

Regular sidekick and real life wife Kitty is here replaced by Dora Bryan, as well as Hattie Jacques, Dandy Nichols, Richard Wattis…

We do the trilogy every few years!

Mother Riley Meets The Vampire (1952) was the last of the fifteen (!) Old Mother Riley movies. Watched this for Bela, in fine form as a megalomaniac, also great at comedy just before his last few tatty movies.

Absolutely. Pity that the novel is even more obscure. It was decades for me between learning of the movie and being able to see it.

Having just rewatched The Fly (1958), the duplication/teleportation scenes are very similar.

The Four-Sided Triangle (1953) UHD/Blu boxset is a gorgeous presentation of an early Hammer sci-fi that presents complex ethical dilemmas with similar technology to the later story, and movies, The Fly.

But please, don’t put spoilers (like the end of the movie) looping behind the menu screen.

That looks very interesting. If I’d more spare time I would build more haunted houses (in Lego)!

Yeah, not well received at the time but certainly delivered. I think the dystopian ideas were scoffed at or misunderstood, at the time. Appreciation of it has grown ever since, especially as the forerunner of “killer games” movies.

I’m so used to movie tie-ins having like 6-8 pages of photos, tops, these are amazing.

There are Star Wars sets of the depicted scenes in all price ranges. These huge sets are aimed at adult fans.

The dustcover on mine is torn, revealing the coloured hardcover beneath, but more intact copies aren’t pricey.

Looking forward to reading this. Not fussed about The Young Ones, I’d agree with his dislikes - they’ve not aged at all well. I want to catch up on the rest of his life and career.

Watching it after the series, it was everything that had been talked about but not shown. Almost unbearably sad, knowing how it ended. Those in the audience who hadn’t seen the series were lost.
