Much as I hate trump, the President is the Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces. Lower rate/rank salutes first & salute is returned by higher rank...and President is the highest rank. In this case, the deceased can't salute, so I would call saluting their casket is meant to be a mark of respect.

The President does as Commander in Chief of the US Military, but usually only after a military individual salutes him first. Not sure that is a presumed salute by the dead soldier in giving their life for their country. Everyone else, hand over their heart.

Obama wearing headgear of any kind in that situation would have caused a collective right wing stroke!
