(Reminds me I should turn on BlueSky notifications)
My response to the oil industry's usual "we are just satisfying demand" argument is that I'll believe this when they fire their sales team, dismantle their marketing department and political lobby apparatus, stop their advertising campaigns and sponsorship agreements and set aggressively shrinking sales targets. And even then, our collective muscle memory and sheer inertia would still keep our economy biased towards their planet-killer value chain.
Hopefully @adamsch.bsky.social doesn't mind me sharing this v good comment he left
Companies that supply dangerous products love to fabricate their own moral neutrality - 'we're just meeting what society demands of us' kinda thing.
Their actions (and internal budgets) say otherwise
Trump says he's going to pull out of the Paris Agreement.
That's a bad move, but it's not "game over" for climate -- not at all! It's "game on," and we must now focus on new climate leadership and new climate tactics.
That's what we're going to do at @projectdrawdown.bsky.social
I've never met anyone who has had an EV who would then choose to return to driving an ICE.
Forget cost savings. Forget 'saving the planet'. Just on driving experience alone, people are immediately sold.
Seems like I've never met anyone within this 3% then...
one of the biggest lies that is told about climate change is that:
it's too late.
it's out of our hands.
our fate is sealed.
but we know how to stop the heating up.

Maintaining production at current levels requires massive investment in new areas & significant risk of stranded assets.

Cover from The Economist from two years ago "Say goodbye to 1.5Β°C; why climate policy is off target". It has a graphic of the Earth with an apple on its head, and a arrow shot through the Earth.
A gentle reminder that if we miss the 1.5Β°C target (and we certainly will), the next target is 1.51Β°C and not 2Β°C. We need to keep fighting.
Every tonne of COβ emitted makes the job of future COβ removal harder, and every 0.01Β°C of temperature increase makes the world more chaotic and dangerous.

I think doing things for their first order outcomes rather than second order effects should be a north star in policy work, for a variety of reasons but mainly because we actually suck at predicting second order effects
