One Long Year Later: It's Not Over, and We Haven't Surrendered
I wrote an essay in the immediate aftermath of the 2024 election, an essay to encourage people to not give up and not assume that the Trumpists had won. It follows, after this prelude about where we a...
The biggest miscalculation of the Trumpists is about human nature. They assume we're all selfish and cowardly and can be cowed into silence or submission or surrender, which is to say they seem to base their version of human nature partly on themselves and partly on their scorn for the rest of us.

I think this is why we're seeing 'but they're paid protestors' about Minnesota (although even I, as a Brit, can tell that's a very distinctive local accent). They can't compute that people who could keep quiet and remain safe are going outside to face danger for neighbours they might not even know.

Mine is a shoebox filled with sealed but loose paper baggies with dates on them. It wanders the house depending what time of year it is.
I purchased some native wildflower seeds so I can plant shaded loving pollinator plants for the back corner under the maple. I already have ferns there.

Listen: because I am hearing this a lot from folks who are in caregiving roles with disabled, sick, dying folks, elders, or children in their care:
You are not unable to do anything or unable to take action.
Care work IS justice work

*And* petro imperialism, which is at its core, settler colonialism.
And the conservative Canadians thought climate change would be good for us not thinking about how it would make us vulnerable to invasion for resources. Fucking donkeys.

It's actually expensive and a national security risk to rely on oil.
Honestly all the shit happening right now is unsurprising to me except I didn't expect it quite this soon. It's the violent end of petro nationalism.

Even locally at council, people who step up in support of unsheltered folks are considered a handful of weirdos that have no jobs.
Don't let it stop you. The more people acting, the less they can say no one cares (or at least it's less effective). But it's not new.

I would like for people to realize that this isn't the first time protestors and advocates have been called "outside agitators." Happens all the time in Canada, whether it be protests for Indigenous rights or climate justice.
Protestors as fringe element not tied to the interests of actual citizens

Alright, we've got a water capacity issue in #WatReg and #WRcouncil heard from many delegates on January 13th about this issue. You can watch the meeting here and/or follow along on this (potentially very long!) thread. www.youtube.com/watch?v=LZbM...

At least I've never seen a great deal of black flies in the South. But I'm also from the North where they reign and the mosquitoes were a hundred times bigger than down here.
