Important (if depressing) to remember that the kind of authoritarian race-baiting expressed by Jenrick on Today (eg presenting all refugees as sexual predators and promising to deport all of them) was taboo in British politics for decades. Yet I doubt any Tory will publicly criticise him

It’s been obvious for some time that Musk’s platform is deliberately & dangerously hideous. There is nothing to stop politicians, up to & including the government, removing themselves from it entirely. Their every utterance would still be reported, regardless of how it entered the public space.

What popped into my head was the punchline of the joke about the two Jamaicans who went to a fancy dress party where guests had to dress as ‘emotions’.

Well, quite. I do think, though, this is the most likely progression of things to come, rather than magically conjuring space for a “third” bathroom. A real “be careful what you wish for” fable.

As you say, this is the norm in many places - again mainly due to logistics. But the GC campaign will ultimately lead to most ladies loos becoming unisex… so what was your problem with trans women using the ladies?

I’m talking about cis men being more able to enter women’s spaces because GC folk have demanded that trans men use the ladies loos.
Third spaces are obviously a logistical issue for businesses etc with limited space so the upshot of this is that all toilets become unisex.

The fact of the matter is forcing trans women who look like women to use the gents’ increases the risk of them being assaulted.
And forcing trans men who look like men to use the ladies’ makes it easier for ‘bad men’ to enter the ladies’.
It’s a lose-lose whichever side of the argument you’re on.

It doesn’t happen often, obviously, but whenever I get a new carpet, I will lie and roll around on it in deep joy for ages!
