People always ask me : βCristi, how do you manage parenting a baby while going up for tenure?β
Itβs easy. The secret is *flow-based-scheduling*. Here are its three core strategies for new academic parents:
Sleep when the baby sleeps
Cry when the baby cries
Publish when the baby publishes

Springer Nature Discovers MDPI β The Strain on Scientific Publishing
Home page for the paper βThe Strain on Scientific Publishingβ by Mark A Hanson, Dan Brockington, Paolo Crosetto and Pablo Gomez Barreiro
Springer-Nature launched a series of "Discover" journals that closely mimic MDPI titles -- sharing *identical* journal names, and likely similar business model.
What is going on, and why researcher will - as always - fall for it?

Havent studied this professionally but used public transport all my life, and can state that for me showing up and seeing 10 minutes or more to wait feels frustrating. 6-9 minutes is ok-ish, 5 or less feels good. The gold standard should be a 5 minutes rythm, if at all possible.

Though, indeed, the post reunification differences seem sharper at the borders than the pre-WW2 differences. So there do seem to be some causal effects of the separation.

Greens moving from hipster Kreuzberg/Wedding to serene Charlottenburg and SchΓΆneberg is really telling. Curious to see if Die Linke, freed from the BSW stalinists, will become the Greens of the next generation.

I suspect this is a HUGELY underestimated factor in radicalization. If you look at, say, QAnon boards, itβs not really folks looking for scapegoats for their dire material circumstances. Itβs middle-class people with boring lives who want to imagine theyβre in The Parallax View.

Putinβs Three Years of Humiliation
The Russian president canβt win his war against Ukraine unless he persuades its allies to betray it.
this, at least, is clear: "Trump is genuinely bored of the war. He doesnβt understand it. He doesnβt know why it started. He doesnβt know how to stop it. He wants to change the channel and watch something else."

Since becoming a dad a few years ago, the disconnect between the astounding beauty of seeing my child grow up, and the darkness that seems to engulf the larger (political) world around us, has been jarring for me. Still not sure how to deal with that. Tune out of the social media doom machine?
