The Case for Centers for Teaching and Learning (opinion) The work of CTLs is central to higher education.

Kudos to Mary Wright for this excellent piece on the value of centers for teaching and learning. www.insidehighered.com/opinion/view...

I know @liznorell.bsky.social will have some thoughts about this situation.

That's terrible.

This list sounds like the cast of characters of my nightmares.

This might be silly and trite, but I've always followed the advice to write the book you want to read. Don't think about an imaginary audience that may or may not exist. This can hamper the strength of your prose and your argument because you can be tempted to dial back. Write for yourself.

This is stellar advice. Absolutely!

Teaching and learning is the heart of one of the cultural cycles I find the most beautiful, the collective moving forward. If you can somehow keep teaching even though incredibly overwhelming times I think you can transcend your circumstances just that little bit.

If you're looking for the source of academia's leaky pipeline--it's not women's lack of commitment, it's the misogyny of men like this.

I can’t believe you lefty Luddites hate tech so much that you embrace mRNA vaccines, heat pumps, electric bikes, hybrid work, renewable power (and awesome advancements in storage), space telescopes, and hot/cold running water but reject the planet destroying plagiarism enrich the worst people bots!

Being human at work isn’t unprofessional How an email from my dean and a forced office move inspired a days-long crying jag and the discovery that I’m autistic.

What a fantastic, vulnerable, important piece by @liznorell.bsky.social. I cant recommend this enough. For autistic folks, sure, but also for anyone who works with human beings. open.substack.com/pub/engagedl...

The "innovative learning AI chat bot" seems evil to me. Yes, yes, I'm looking for guidance on writing learning outcomes, but I think I should use my DOZENS OF YEARS OF EDUCATION to do that.

I'm so ... relieved? excited? nervous? (yes^3) ... to share this piece with the world. I've been wanting to do so for years, but I needed (a lot of) time to find some peace around these events first. #ActuallyAutistic #HigherEd engagedlearningcollective.substack.com/p/being-huma...

Thanks for the source. I'm just very wary of painting any understanding of our students with a broad brush. Remember that there are lots of students at the University of Mississippi, and many would push back on the narrative in this NY Magazine piece.

I'm in Minnesota today to give a workshop on alternative grading and a keynote on focusing on student learning in the midst of all the chaos in the world of higher ed, the rush to AI, etc. at the College of St. Benedict/St. John's University. Looking forward to the discussions!

TL;DR The "Mississippi Miracle" narrative is truly a double-edged sword.

09.02.2026 14:44 β€” πŸ‘ 4    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

...Constant testing on the standards drains them of creativity, motivation, critical thinking, & all the other things we want for them educationally. Also, this narrative hides the fact that many schools in the state are really struggling in all kinds of other ways. I may write about this soon. 2/2

Mississippi is badly in need of positive stories about its schools, so while I really want to celebrate this (and to continue celebrating the hard work of teachers & students), I also know that the "Miracle" narrative obscures how our kids are demoralized by so much practice testing... 1/2
