Some folks, e.g. Stalinists, confuse these things, for example claiming that condemning Iran's violence necessarily invites a war of aggression. They get these things confused for two reasons. First, they are stupid. Part of being stupid is not having clarity. Second, they are evil.

Maybe it necessitates humanitarian intervention, but as scholars have pointed out, "humanitarian interventions" barely exist & we shouldn't depend on other states to carry them out. In the history of the world, maybe there were 2 total genuine "human interventions". The rest are propaganda

None of this necessitates a war of aggression on Iran like what Israel and the US are doing right now. Wars of aggression are not humanitarian interventions aimed at holding the Iranian government to account. They're simply another state exercising its own capacity for evil.

If we subscribe to the basic moral principle that people are responsible for the evil they commit, even if it is just one fraction of the total evil in the world, then the Iranian government should be identified as culpable for that evil and should be held to justice.

The fact that the US killed scores of people does not erase the fact that Iran also killed scores of people, even if the US killed several orders of magnitude more people. I don't see why people (Stalinists) are being scandalized that we reserve criticism for the Iranian government.

Anarchists correctly claim that all states are structurally coercive & violent—a fact so obvious even non-anarchist scholars agree. Anarchists don't claim all states are *equal in power or harm.* Nonetheless, asymmetries in power don't erase weaker states' coercion & violence.
