This weeks guest blog is from the awesome Kate Rennie with an immunology introduction from Claire Walker
It continues this months mycology theme but talks about how baking and yeast work in non-standard baking processes, and why gluten free baking is so hard

Iβm on holiday so canβt answer queries though
Continuing the Girlymicro blog theme for the month, today we're talking more things mycology. If you love bread as much as I love bread, you will be excited to read more about all things baking & how this sits alongside the worlds of microbiology/immunology.

This weeks post is a little more technical than normal, but given new guidance, and the ever increasing importance of C. auris, I thought it was worth taking some time to cover what it is, why it's important and what we can do about it.

To new PIs: The game you set out to play doesnβt follow the same rules anymore.
Since this is all new, all advice is bad advice, but I would aim to (and am trying) diversify funding you apply to as much as you can.
We need to keep doing science.
For everyone.
It's such a privilege for me to share a guest blog post this week from Anthony De Souza. Ant has undertaken work on tacking Health Inequalities through the Differential Attainment Toolkit. I'm so grateful to be able to share his insights.

I'm getting very close to my 250th post & I was wondering if any of you would be prepared to do me a favour......
Would you mind writing a couple of lines or a paragraph about the blog?
I'd love to collate them & include them in what feels like a pretty milestone moment
I've been spending a lot of time thinking about the power of being an ally recently and how to do it better. I'm no expert in this, I just have a real wish to improve and learn. I thought, as it's Pride this month, I would try & capture some of that thinking

The world is pretty stressful right now. so heading into the weekend I thought it was timely to share a post about the benefits of getting up and taking a walk, either to centre ourselves or with the people we care about.

This week we have a brilliant guest blog from Claire Walker finishing off the blog series on how DNA and DNA sequencing can be used to impact decision making, both personal and clinical.

There's a lot of challenge right now, no matter which professional grp you sit in. I thought it might be timely to write something 2 remind myself & others that even in challenging times there are ways in which we can find the positive #nostormlastsforever

The people of #Gaza are hungry, exhausted, and facing a growing health crisis. Displacement has stripped them of safety and dignity.
Humanitarian aid must reach them β NOW.
Watch and share.

I'm lucky enough to be off to the #ahawards 2day. I wanted to take this moment to say why I'm celebrating. For me, it's not about the possibility of winning, it's about the opportunity to share in the joy and celebrating my brilliant workforce.

I've had the best time over the last month putting together a blog series on DNA and how knowing more about it holds such opportunities for us all. To help find them, I've put the whole series together in a single post.

It's official: the #PandemicAccord is officially adopted by the World Health Assembly!
My warmest congratulations to @who.int Member States for their commitment to keeping their people and the world safer.
What a moment in global health history. Together!
Prof Dame Jenny Harries, UKHSA Chief Executive said, 'It is gratifying to see the Pandemic Agreement adopted. It is clear that international co-operation and collaboration must be at the very heart of our pandemic preparedness strategy if it is to be effective, and this agreement is a welcome step towards making the world a safer place from pandemic threats.'
Member States of the World Health Organization (@who.int) today formally adopted the world's first Pandemic Agreement.

17.05.2025 18:17 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Thereβs been some βadviceβ coming from some quarters for scientists not to focus on DEI-related funding cuts.
I wholly reject this concept.
Cutting programs designed to reduce science and healthcare disparities is as detrimental to science as anything else, both morally and functionally.

In part 4 of the DNA blog series I've got another book review - this time Upgrade by Blake Crouch. This book is all about DNA editing and how it has the power to change the world. The big question is, will it change for good or ill?
