Great isn't it, an absolute stunner with Barbara Steele at her glorious best. It really doesn't get the love it deserves.

03.03.2026 17:44 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0I like that 😆 I think his offensive comments stuck with me so vividly because I'd always thought him an excellent chat show host. Now I know he was a professional tw*t as well, it all makes sense 😄
03.03.2026 17:43 — 👍 2 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0I remember Parkinson reviewing Derek Jarman's 'Caravaggio' with some disgustingly homophobic comments that would rightly have anyone fired immediately today.
03.03.2026 16:22 — 👍 2 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0Add me to that chorus! It's a terrific film, as much about growing up and loss as it is horror. Very little blood, no graphic violence but a surreal story of an alien plot with a nightmare logic that just works. There's nothing quite like it.
03.03.2026 16:19 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0Exactly! If in doubt, lie! Just read another review and go with it, it's not like anyone can prove it... 😂
03.03.2026 16:13 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0It seems to somehow slip under the radar, but I do my utmost to plug it here at least once a year. Thank you for your comments, perhaps it's finally getting noticed! 😄
03.03.2026 16:10 — 👍 2 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0As much as I admire Barry Norman, it sounds like he wasn't too qualified to review the sequel then! Can't believe he'd not heard of this, it had a general release and even hit my neck of the woods...
03.03.2026 15:13 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0To be honest I've never seen it as funny, but as long as she had a good time with it! 😆
03.03.2026 15:04 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0Same here, I saw this at the cinema back in '79 and it completely blew me away. Scared the pants off me too! I enjoy the sequels (I own the Blu Ray Boxset of the entire series) but nothing comes close to this classic, there are so many layers to it. One of my favourite US films of that era.
03.03.2026 14:48 — 👍 2 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0It's wonderful isn't it. Maybe it's me but it doesn't seem to get the same love as her other Italian gothics but it's beautifully made and Barbara's at her bewitching best. And agreed, anything other than the Italian B&W version is a travesty!

Refreshingly offbeat creepy cult classic brings emotional depth to its nightmare narrative. Its seriously scary and Angus Scrimm's an absolute scream. 1979.

I agree, of the eight (I think!) gothic horror films Steele made in Italy this is arguably one of the best, yet one of the least discussed. It's an absolute beauty.
03.03.2026 13:07 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0An excellent observation, perhaps Steven Moffat had seen it before creating the terrifying Weeping Angels for the good Doctor! 😱
03.03.2026 12:11 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0It's honestly worth it, there are also some badly colourised versions doing the rounds but the original B&W Italian version (with subtitles) is excellent, very highly regarded and rightly so. If you can find it, it's a great night in! 😀
03.03.2026 11:16 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0Agreed, he always knew what the audience wanted! 😁

An Angel for Satan. 1966. Death follows the finding of a cursed statue in the last Italian gothic from Barbara Steele. Dark and exquisitely eldritch. 1966.

Great isn't it, Monogram get a lot of grief but they always deliver on the entertainment front and this is no exception. Terrific fun.
02.03.2026 22:32 — 👍 2 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0You do have to admire their work ethic don't you. I did read that this was the only film the three made together, Zucco was credited for 'Return of the Ape Man' but, aside from a single remaining shot, withdrew prior to filming due to illness. And yes, I love the nod to Lugosi in the final scene 😀
02.03.2026 16:43 — 👍 2 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0I hope not, I trust the wisdom of Zucco and have a quick pray to Ramboona whenever I can...!

Loopy Lugosi steals the lifeforce from kidnapped young women to revive his dead wife. Lovably cheap chills with a cracking cast. 1944.

I must've been around 10 years old when I pretended to be sick to get the afternoon off school and watch this on TV! A fantastic film that I've loved ever since, and its still utterly plausible.
02.03.2026 14:13 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0Couldn't agree more, and I like what you did there... 👏😁
02.03.2026 13:07 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0Yes, it's a fine film. The concept is still plausible and it's convincingly done, the cast are all excellent and the effects still stand out. Terrific.
02.03.2026 11:59 — 👍 2 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0Indeed, and they still hold up really well today. Splendid stuff!
02.03.2026 10:49 — 👍 3 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0It's great isn't it, on paper it sounds pretty dull but everything comes so nicely together it's surprisingly effective.
02.03.2026 10:49 — 👍 2 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0And I meant to add, excellent choice of still there, thanks! 😱
02.03.2026 09:51 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0It's fantastic isn't it, and I think the effects still hold up pretty well. For me the concept of a meteor or bit of space rock reacting in our atmosphere was more credible than an alien invasion, it terrified me as a kid! Great cast too, a neglected '50s gem.

That rare beast. An intelligent 50s scifi with a credible concept, feasible threat and excellent effects. Who knew rocks were so thrilling. 1957.
