Yeah I think that's pretty solid speculation considering the format of game that it is. It also didn't mesh well with early players when npcs could be snarky or disagreeable but I think them having a personality is half the fun of it.

Some of the older games actually did have some interactions like this, in general the villagers have been getting more "one note" with each new release and idrk why? But even then it still wasn't a huge factor. It's always still been *mostly* how it is now.
