@peter-stpets.bsky.social
Chief Executive at St Petrock's, Exeter's local homelessness charity. Loves people and desperately keen to see the end of homelessness so I have to find another job. Walker, biker, believer, realistic optimist, change-maker.
Just deleted my X/Twitter account.
I feel clean again!

Big thanks to St Petrock's Housing team, who've just accommodated 3 people who were sleeping rough on #Exeter's streets. So grateful for the caring, courageous and fun team I have the joy to lead.

So it's Christmas Eve. I'm looking forward to time off, time with my family, time to remember that God chose to become a person like us.
But for those who are #homeless, #ChristmasDay is just another day to survive.
But St Petrock's will be open serving Christmas dinner.

As you, like me, warm up to #Christmas festivities, please remember those for whom this is a painful, lonely, cold and dangerous time. #homelessness #roughsleeping

And many of these children in Temporary Accommodation will end up disadvantaged for life, especially if "temporary" ends up being many months. And so the cycle of homelessness and social inequality rolls on...

It's a gentle kind of victim blaming. Come on, depressed person. Pull yourself together, take responsibility and reach out.
I know it's not meant that way, but to someone who can't reach out because they're depressed, it must feel like they're being told it's their fault for not making the effort.
Well said John. I've been thinking this for ages, but never articulated it.

Thinking about those on the streets right now.
Help rough sleepers by donating to the amazing St Petrock's below.....

This is such a glaring, stupid policy failure with outcomes that are both cruel and costly - it's great to see coverage in the mainstream press.

And the biggest tragedy of all?
UK Gov decided to stop reporting on #homeless deaths after 2021
It's almost as if they think homeless people don't matter.
Looking forward to @teamlabouruk.bsky.social recognising that the deaths of homeless people actually matter.
@steveracemp.bsky.social
Death statistic for #homeless people are terrifying.
741 homeless people died in 2021
35% of deaths were due to drug poisoning
13.4% suicide (<1% in general pop.)
9.6% alcohol-related
So well over half homeless deaths are so-called deaths by despair.

PS. I don't really mean "forget where people live" as clearly geography is linked to prevalence of social exclusion. But the impact of homelessness is FAR higher than where people live.
20.11.2024 11:30 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Forget where people live, what about #homelessness? Life expectancy for homeless women is just 43 years. Homeless men 47. www.cqc.org.uk/guidance-pro...
