We’ll share our work on a league-normalized plus-minus approach in football and how it can uncover value in the transfer market.

Lets catch up if you are attending!

Great article @probberechts.bsky.social @jessejdavis.bsky.social and Maaike!
So important to know if what you build really matters

Its funny you wrote "Suds G" because in India we add a "ji" (pronounced as the alphabet "G") as a respectful suffix to people's names! 😂

@numberstorm.bsky.social @unravelsports.com wonder if something like this is what would make sense positionally?

On Saturday I presented a Graph Neural Network Expected Possession Value model at @pydatalondon.bsky.social 2025.

This 𝐆𝐫𝐚𝐩𝐡𝐄𝐏𝐕 model is an ML approach that predicts scoring probability for any moment in the game

Ahh I see what you mean. Not an on-field sport, but chess perhaps. You could be one move away from checkmate, not see it, and still end up losing. Although this would probably never happen with top ranked players, only very low rated players I'd imagine

American Football maybe? Partiots v Falcons at the 2017 Superbowl comes to mind when the Patriots were down 28-3

Agreed! The van Nistelrooy poacher archetype is something you don't see anymore because every striker (and for that matter, every player) is required to do so much more than their basic functions

Given the way the game is evolving the concept of a classic CF is dead now, isn't it? Think most teams just prefer to spread their goals across their forward line

I have not read the article but the "hope" factor was probably relative to each teams, right? Like the hope from Nottingham fans was to probably avoid relegation?

Like any tech, I think it all depends on how it ends up being used — students might copy-paste answers for discussion forums without using their own brains, teachers might auto-grade it, or it could be used responsibly for the applications you mentioned.
