Writers should internalize Lao Tzu's lesson about how the emptiness at the center of a wheel is what makes it useful, and how a pot is valuable because of where the clay *isn't*. Corporate geek culture has warped us into thinking that negative spaces are flaws that need to be fixed.

The Midtown Greenway, a below-grade pedestrian and bike path in Minneapolis. The path goes below the cross streets. This shot shows many bridges from path level that makes it look like a tunnel, although there is open sky between each bridge. Each side of the path is flanked by green space. A biker is heading away from the camera. There is grafitti on the nearest bridge.

So I think this month is the Midtown Greenway’s 25th birthday. I feel like it has to be one of the top city defining things built in in the last quarter decade? Can’t imagine the city without it…

Would love to see your favorite greenway photos πŸ“·

The cover page of a comic called "One Bad Neighbor - Life Next to a Public Golf Course." The image is of a house about to be hit with a golf ball. A sheet hangs above the house with the title and a crude drawing of Homer Simpson wearing a golf visor, with a golf club and golf ball next to him.

After a week of smoke, a look at Canada's approach to fighting wildfires differently Minnesota saw a record-breaking six-day air quality alert due to wildfires burning in Canada sending smoke into the skies. Canada is seeing one of it’s worst wildfire seasons on record.

Great discussion here on the causes of increased smoke in our Minnesota skies.
Wildfires have increased 4X in Canada and the US since the 1970s. πŸ”₯

β€œAI is coming to take our jobs” no it isn’t. It’s a CEO named Gary taking some shitty advice from a VC who has never had a real job in their life, trying to maximise their quarterly earnings by firing as many people as they can get away with to make number go up, and it isn’t sustainable

The fact that ai art and writing programs are built on stolen work really seems to be fading from the discussion even amongst artists and writers, which is a bit shit.

Sketchbook comic.

Panel 1: a disembodied voice says β€œI KNOW a.i. is ethically, ecologically and esthetically awful, but I just gotta say…”
Lucy is reacting with a ._. Face and thinking β€œdo ya? Do ya really GOTTA?”

Panel 2: Lucy’s thought bubble reads: β€œdo you just GOTTA recite some tired anecdote using the phrase β€˜I just typed it in!’ That just amounts to you admitting that your cheapness, laziness and poor taste outweighs your unexamined ethical code?”

My hot take is that publishers can solve their "damn, this artist can't meet a deadline" problem by paying us with the same regularity they pay their in-house staff. Because applying for hospital financial aid with the system we are currently paid in is a disaster.

Well, everything. The death of art. [Laughs.] A thing that I’ve been struck by in the last year of tech development around art is that what makes us human is making art, even if you’re not a professional artist. This is kind of corny, but I think about cavemen, right? One of the first things we ever did as a species was put our handprints on a wall, and it’s just this drive that has always been there. It’ll always be there. And I think it’s preposterous that these people are suggesting that they develop this technology, and the first thing they want to eliminate is art, so you have more time to…what, email? I don’t know what they think I’m going to do with my fucking day. Most of the population is not artists, but a lot of the population has artistic hobbies, and if you replace that with a computer doing it for you or whatever, it’s just pointless. I think there’s a death drive in these people, almost, and an actual hatred of artists; they are jealous of people with imagination because they don’t have one, and they almost consciously want to eliminate it.

No I don't want "humane" deportations, for the same reason I don't want "friendly" cops in schools or "understanding" genital inspectors at sporting events.

The answer is: Hell yes, trans kids should be able to participate in sports according to how they identify.

The emotional damage done by rejecting a kid’s identity is the real concern here. Not the bigotry of a busybody parent trying to bully that one kid.

To be clear, without public pressure, Mayor Frey would have maintained the status quo. Under his leadership, problematic officers who have harmed the public are rewarded with promotions. This absolutely signals to other officers β€œreforms” is nothing more than lip service.
