DEAD FIRST by Johnny Compton – Review
The nitty-gritty: Mystery meets mind-bending supernatural terror in Dead First, a unique tale of revenge, redemption and murder. “Sometimes, people leave part of themselves in a horrible place, creating an eternal scar.” Dead First surprised me in just about every possible way. This is a gritty, violent and emotional story that mostly leans into mystery/detective fiction, but there’s a supernatural element that sets it apart.

A FOREST, DARKLY by A.G. Slatter – Review
The nitty-gritty: A witchy, feminist fairy tale told with dazzling style and wit, A Forest, Darkly is full of unique magic and irresistible characters. “Witchcraft isn’t just potions and powders and spells. It’s whispers and gentleness, giving folk a sense they’re free to share their secrets with you—a feeling of a door left ajar, open without obligation…It’s knowing that every lie told will eventually reveal itself and the person who told it.”

KRACKLE’S LAST MOVIE by Chelsea Sutton – Review
The nitty-gritty: Weird, grotesque, absurd and emotional, Krackle’s Last Movie is a quirky mystery with plenty of heart. “When I’m conducting these interviews, I am never in one place. I shift from their childhood until their death, dropping into the days before their change, then into the moment they knew, for sure, that their body, their mind, and their life would never be the same.”

What’s On My Plate – February 2026
Welcome to February's TBR, and yes, it's bigger than I had hoped, lol. I really am trying to take on less review books, but that strategy didn't work very well for February. I have already read two of these, though, as well as Agnes Aubert's Mystical Cat Shelter, which I read and reviewed last month. This is a seriously great TBR, and I'm excited to read all of these!

AGNES AUBERT’S MYSTICAL CAT SHELTER by Heather Fawcett – Review
The nitty-gritty: Magic, mayhem and a bunch of shelter cats make up Heather Fawcett’s latest, an enchanting tale, perfect for fans of Emily Wilde. After loving Heather Fawcett’s Emily Wilde series, I could not wait to read her next book! And I’m happy to say that Agnes Aubert’s Mystical Cat Shelter was just as delightful, full of magic, humor, lovable characters, and best of all, lots of adorable cats.

ON SUNDAYS SHE PICKED FLOWERS by Yah Yah Scholfield – Review
The nitty-gritty: A beautifully written story of survival and redemption, Yah Yah Scholfield’s weird, devastating and brutal Southern Gothic debut is a rollercoaster of emotions, both monstrous and beautiful. “It happened in the kitchen. Very germane—butchery in the cooking place, the cleaver and carving knife bearing witness. The tile, slick, grouted, was receptive to the killing: it expected bloodiness.” On Sundays She Picked Flowers…
