Text that reads: In Buddhism, we say it takes 49 days for the soul of the deceased to be reborn into the next life. But virtual avatars never really die, and the Internet's content mill never really stops, relevancy waning with each passing second. As such, graduated talents typically spend much less time in purgatory than the average human soul before returning to the public eye.
Text that reads: People think I’m naive for believing in happy endings, for braking completely at stop signs and pouring creamer into my coffee until it turns the color of sand skimmed by sea. They assume that my role at the theme park has rotted my perception of reality, or that I never experience any real hardship, or that I’m an ignorant snowflake liberal. And they’re right, for the most part. Except for the liberal thing.
Text that reads: She’s not exactly sure what it is, somewhere between anger and grief and a whole lot of hurt, as if someone ran glass shards through her interior lining or stuck quartz between the teeth of her cogs. She is the longest standing member of Justice. She is a broken doll in a Goodwill bin. She is the friend of Elizabeth Rose Bloodflame, the strongest person she’s ever known in her too-long life, who is currently looking at her like a lost man does a statue of an inanimate god.
Cecilia was made to serve, obedience etched into her code like an organism’s DNA. But she isn’t the same automaton she was a millennia ago. She has glass in her plating and crystals in her gears and emotions that churn iron-hot underneath her skin. It makes her think that maybe she was broken long before her power coil failed. Maybe she broke the moment her creators decided for her that autonomy was more important than instinct.
