Michel Callon (1945-2025)

Once retired, and despite declining health, he continued to publish and follow the latest research developments.

His curiosity and dedication inspired many researchers around the world.

We have lost a wonderful colleague and an exceptional researcher.

Awarded the CNRS Silver Medal in 2007, he devoted a great deal of his work to questions of scientific and technical democracy, and later to economics and the instruments involved in shaping markets.

He focused early on on the innovation processes, which he analyzed notably on the basis of the notion of “translation” borrowed from Michel Serres.

Alongside John Law, Madeleine Akrich, Antoine Hennion and, of course, Bruno Latour, whom he had brought to the École des Mines, he played a key role in the emergence of contemporary science and technology studies.

The Center for the sociology of innovation learned with great sadness that Michel Callon has passed away.

A graduate of the École des Mines, Michel joined the center in the late 1960s and was its director from 1982 to 1994.

Age verification via face scans is not safety — it's surveillance. Biometric age guessing is inaccurate, discriminatory, and creepy AF. Stop normalizing it.

Each time I listen to people trying to convince me about a use case of AI that is ‘interesting’ or ‘funny’, I can’t help but hearing the voice of an excited (white, spoiled) young boy who fantasizes about his toys and how powerful he is when he plays with them.
And I shut up. I’ve lost my patience.

New official White House Portrait of Trump

New official White House Portrait of Trump

As some have already noticed, Trump's latest official portrait bears a striking resemblance to the aesthetic of #AIslop. In particular, his shirt and tie display an otherworldly glow and an almost painterly smoothness. To me, this is further evidence of how integral AI has become to Trump's brand

Amsterdam University Press is sending out letters today notifying series editors and authors that they have been taken over – or shall we say: annexed? – by Taylor & Francis. Not a good day. The evil empire of academic publishing is growing.

I don't want a water-hogging data center to supply me with words that look like truth, I want to get lost in a wikipedia rabbit hole 6 layers deep, where I learn the answer to my original question, 4 subsequent questions, and the weight of the heaviest intact meteorite on earth (approx 60 tons).
