People believe that when you're LGBTIQ+ you come out once, but the reality is that every time you meet a new person, you have to study them to decide if it's a safe space to say it or not

screenshot from the TV show Columbo. the titular character Columbo is shown standing at the edge of a driveway, looking down at golden retriever who is happily basking on the pavement in front of him. the subtitles read: "You're a real friendly boy, aren't you? Oh, you're a girl."

thinking about this screenshot from Columbo that makes it look like a 90s point-and-click adventure game

Graph titled: How I Feel About a Piece of Art

The vertical axis is labeled: I think it's (blank spot) at what it's going for.

The spectrum ranges from Bad to Good.

The horizontal axis is labeled: I think what it's going for is (blank spot).

The axis goes from Boring to Interesting.

I have color coded regions of the graph. Areas falling under Good and Boring, Good and Interesting, and Bad and Interesting are labeled "great"

The extreme corner of Good and Interesting is labeled "Disco Elysium"

The area falling under Bad and Boring is labeled "Oh haha thanks I'm Full".

The areas in the middle are labeled "S'ok"

A nebulous area at the extreme of Bad and Boring is labeled "Live Action Disney Reboots"

2.1 Lenses, Not Boxes
I wondered whether this section was necessary, but games discourse seems to repeatedly find itself adrift in questions of whether _ counts as a _. We have seen
the question repeatedly: Do games count as art? Do games without goals count as games? Is The Sims a game? Are hypertexts interactive fiction? Are
Twine pieces literature? In fairness to the researchers cited here, all of whom I respect immensely, many of these sources pose or imply the question rhetorically. Still, the necessity of such a framing frustrates me.
"Is _ a _?" is, in my opinion, a fruitless question. The question can never be answered to anyone's satisfaction, and it often serves as either a provocation
to espouse politics or as a cover to institute gatekeeping. Its agenda is usually opaque
to onlookers and bewildering to those trying to advance the field from across disciplines.
We should be thinking in lenses, not boxes.
It is always more interesting to ask "If we think of _ through the lens of _, what do we learn?" We know it is more interesting to ask "What do we learn
by considering Tom Stoppard through the lens of poststructuralism?" than to ask "Is Stoppard's work poststructuralist?" And while some works may be more or less fruitful when examined through different lenses, sometimes the most unlikely pairings of lenses and objects are the most rewarding. Certainly any of the questions above would be much better served by reframing them in this way.

Hey putting it out there, Disco Elysium is like the most important game ever to me, but dont play the mobile version that's releasing in a few days. The actual devs and writers of the original game were fucked over by the publisher, and this mobile version is a shameful exploitation of their passion

I still have some signed Artist Proofs if you want the poster itself!

What childhood movie makes you weep? I feel like The Iron Giant hits harder than most.

Generative Al is being marketed as a tool designed to reduce or eliminate the need for developed, cognitive skillsets. It uses the work of others to simulate human output, except that it lacks grasp of nuance, contains grievous errors, and ultimately serves the goal of human beings being neurologically weaker due to the promise of the machine being better equipped than the humans using it would ever exert the effort to be.

The people that use generative Al for art have no interest in being an artist; they simply want product to consume and forget about when the next piece of product goes by their eyes. The people that use generative Al to make music have no interest in being a musician; they simply want a machine to make them something to listen to until they get bored and want the machine to make some other disposable slop for them to pass the time with.

The people that use generative Al to write things for them have no interest in writing. The people that use generative Al to find factoids have no interest in actual facts. The people that use generative Al to socialize have no interest in actual socialization.

In every case, they've handed over the cognitive load of developing a necessary, creative human skillset to a machine that promises to ease the sweat equity cost of struggle. Using generative Al is like asking a machine to lift weights on your behalf and then calling yourself a bodybuilder when it's done with the reps. You build nothing in terms of muscle, you are not stronger, you are not faster, you are not in better shape.

You're just deluding yourself while experiencing a slow decline due to self-inflicted atrophy.

I have finally fully and accurately explained my problem with how it’s marketed and used.

And now, you can use it, too.

I think a lot about Disco Elysium's take on centrism. The writers are scathing in their critique of every ideology under the sun, no one spared - but none receive such venom as MORALISM. Even nationalism & fascism are treated as mostly pathetic, emasculating - centrism is the true face of terror.
