obv significant that they admit this, but my understanding has been that this was self-evident? like you need a model of "what's true" in the system for it to be able to check against, and no such model exists?

(to say nothing of the fact that it's pulling from a store of text including fiction and lies and inaccuracies etc etc)

the huge volume of people who are apparently so convinced by the most flimsy anthropomorphism that they assume chatbots must have access to more complete and truer information than they have themselves is just historically miserable to me lol

recent book 'against platforms' talks about this and about how the desperation to point to The Most Accurate Reality using Data is always an ideological project. this is one of my pet frustrations and the cultural gen-ai bubble is really built around it i think
