Regatta fees and not in a good way. An American buddy of mine was whining over the weekend about Rowfest fees. $119 for a 1x, $299 for 4x. Seems in 2021 is was $74 and $202
Yes costs rise but it looks like stateside US Rowing is slowly killing the Golden Goose

Sometimes I think, I'm not smart enough or too lazy . I hear that Blaise Metreweli the new head of MI6 (and first ever female leader) also won the Womens Boat Race with Cambridge in 1997 rowing at 5 and this year rowed in the Cambridge veterens race.
Possibly with false beard and eyebrows me thinks

What, yes, it's a service that allows you to post oars that you have but don't need and oars that you need because someone broke one. Only for the UK and Ireland but a good idea as these things are expensive and having a set of 7 sweeps or only a port scull is pretty useless.

Thames river rage drama ends with huge fine
Boat-owner that caused Kingston Regatta incident charged more than £4,000. Video evidence shows disgraceful behaviour on the water.

Innovation in rowing. An occasional series.
Composite boats. Developed by Empacher with BASF in the 60s and with a Gold at the 1972 Munich olympics suddenly wood boats were out. Carbocraft in the UK and then Vespoli (with a Carbocraft boat) in the USA brought them to the masses.

it weighs 106g (4 oz), orientates your blade perfectly at square and feather, slow to wear, doesn't jam up (SS gate arm and brass nut insert) and the little silver nylock nut stops it clamping up too much on the oar shaft.
Lastly you can adjust the oar pitch using the little inserts.
Brilliant!

The humble oarlock. The $25 to $30 a pair part that connects your $1000 pair of oars to your $15000 single scull.
Lasts a long time, hardly ever breaks even in extreme circumstances and is an engineering delight designwise
Take some time to let your oarlocks know you appreciate them.

So it's happening, Hudson and Fluid will attract additional 25% tariffs coming in the USA> You will all have to wait to see how that will impact actual prices of the boats but it wont be good.
Hopefully Trump will leave the Europeans alone

Jubilant scenes as Looe rowers cross finish line in Caribbean
The four gig rowers from Looe arrived first in their Mixed class and 6th in the fleet.
On a lighter note congratulations to the mixed crew from Looe in Cornwall for getting across the finish line of the atlantic challange.

Freak Accidents Mark Head of the Charles | News | The Harvard Crimson
Three rowers were injured and two champion teams disqualified from the Head of the Charles Regatta after freak boating accidents
Back to bow balls.
2002 on the Charles a 1x sculler was pierced by the bow of an 8, the bow ball came off at impact and the point of the boat went through the poor single sculler, he was badly injured.

World Rowing - Rowing legend Redgrave set for ice-dance challenge
Redgrave has just started competing in the latest series of British reality show Dancing on Ice. He went through the first show.
OK the big question has to be "why would you do this"
Sir Steve Redgrave, greatest rower ever (Possibly / probably) is doing dancing on ice....... and World Rowing made a story of it

Heel restraints were developed by the lovely Carl Douglas 45+ years ago when boats moved from clogs to shoes. 5cm long please, the rule I think is 7cm max (FISA specification adopted by British Rowing April 1st 2016)
When swapping your shoes in a boat always refit the heel ties

Heel restraints. Anyone who has fallen out of a 1x and many that have fallen out of other boats appreciate the value of correctly installed heel restraints As you gracefully roll into the water those correctly installed heel ties hold the heel down and your feet slip effortlessly out. Life saving 👍
