I genuinely think that's what JSR could've been if it has a sequel that further refined its mechanics and systems and didn't throw it in the trash for glorified Banjo-Kazooie with rollerskates and graffiti.
This also heavily bothers me when I see people gas up BRC and its sequel.

Penny would've been so sick if it had an arcade mode that just went through all the levels and had a countdown timer (perhaps it's constantly low and you had ways to extend time that disincentivized skips).
Games like this suffer from lack of systemic structure that arcade design could help with.

Digging wider requires exponentially more labor when you start digging deeper. It's what people mean when they say "mechanics" slop. When games rely too much on expanding systems and tools, rather than design. Limitations clarify design. So does difficulty but people don't wanna hear it.

Certain services don't have competition just because of hosting costs (it's why YouTube still gets used) but basic timeline feeds, messenger services, gallery websites, there's a lot of choice out there. When a service isn't properly serving its users anymore it's a reason to look for change.

I hope people can become familiar with the concept of not putting all faith into a single service/platform again. It was ten years ago that Skype became inconvenient so people switched from using it. Even further back people manually opted to download and use other browsers than Internet Explorer.

Games media isn't completely devoid of integrity, but it's plagued by decades of bad actors and corporate interest. People like Geoff Keighley, the entire executive staff at G4, several games magazines that followed the money, not integrity.

Investigative games journalism is possibly legitimately different from what the average Joe calls "journalism". It would be more productive to help distinctuate those.

"How far you've come as a player" is already built into the game, by replaying the game, which you should strive for as a quality to have anyway.
All this really adds is "how far has the character come?", which requires the narrative tension of a first playthrough to have any weight to it.

It's good narrative, but not necessarily good game design. It works maybe once or twice, but the appeal of a moment like this falls off with every playthrough.
If anything, you're adding something that feels somewhat repetitive and anti-climactic to returning players. It's theme park appeal.

Getting the 1cc in a game that takes less than 4 minutes also gets you to think about "how tf do you turn this into a circa 20 minute game?". Whatever worked best here shouldn't suffer by having the game be blown up 5 times in length.

Tiny games like this are so important to feel out what works. The dev for this already said he regrets the Oblique perspective. The game is still fantastic in spite of it!
