Before CCB of the 10th Armored arrived on scene, Combat Command Reserve of the 9th Armored was already located in the Ardennes as VIII Corps Reserve. For between 36-48 hours they were all that stood between several Panzer Divisions and Bastogne and were assigned the mission to die whilst buying time

This is the first part of several Orbats I will be putting together related to Combat Command organizations during specific battles. Starting off with Combat Command B of the 10th Armored DIvision prior to the arrival of the 101st Airborne Division at Bastogne.

The problem with stopping escalatory violence is that it requires political factions to see the other side as not an enemy. You can't only find violence targeted at yourself as abhorrent.

Which is difficult to square with months of cheerleading for deploying the military to Democratic-run cities.

Any mistakes are my own - the source by Governor General Hurley outlines A21s proposed structure as a concept vs proposing a proper #orbat and ToE.

However, A21s final deathnote was the East-Timor Crisis and INTERFET, which proved Australia needed an ADF and army capable of conducting expeditionary operations.

Overall, the structure was abandoned due to strategic ambiguity and shifting guidance, failure to meet the change objectives, internal resistance and cultural challenges (which I am hearing now is still a problem for infantry) & the lack of resources to carry out the desired reforms properly.

A key aspect of A21 was the investment in air and ground mobility assets, including helicopters, Bushmasters, and ASLAVs. These assets would enhance the mobility of the TFs and enable them to operate effectively in low force-to-space ratio environments.

The A21 plan proposed moving away from the traditional divisional/corps structure and creating independent TFs by embedding combat arms (including armour such as tanks, artillery, and engineers) within infantry units.

It is a structure optimised for the Defence of Australia doctrine.

Across the Western world, Armies wanted to experiment with and develop new force structures after the Cold War to prepare for the unknowns of the 21st Century. The #ausarmy's A21 restructure was one set of proposed reforms, and this structure is the subject of today's #orbat.

People don't seem to grasp that deterrence—the ability to constrain behavior by holding in reserve the threat of violence—has effectively caused cartels to not target (over 1 million) US citizens in Mexico.

You lose that deterrence when you actually use violence and disturb the tacit agreement.

The organization of a US Marine Tank Battalion in 1968. It had an H&S Company, 3 Tank Companies, and an attached Antitank Company added through the reduction of the divisional Antitank Battalion into a single company. The H&S Company had 2 M48 tanks, 9 M67 flame tanks, and 1 M51 recovery vehicle. Each Tank Company has 17 M48 tanks and an M51 recovery vehicle. The Antitank Company has 20 M50 Ontos tank destroyers.
