oh no I guess I'll have to slowly bond with people over shared interests and indirect interaction 🤷‍♂️

I have more thought-out reasons but like, it shows how relentlessly focused on optimization and addictive behavior social media has gotten that when any platform introduces friction to the process I'm like, that's probably a good sign

I find it quite frustrating that letterboxd doesn't have DMs which is, I think, a sign that that's a feature it's smart to omit

A ★★★½ review of Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist (2008) This has such a fascinating structure! Obviously, in any rom-com, you know the leads are going to end up together: they're on the poster, they're in the title. But this goes out of its way to make tha...

A ★★★★ review of Thief (1981) Hoooo-weee FUCK. First Mann, and I didn't know what I was getting into! Terms like "neo-noir" get kind of thrown around, you know? I think I expected this to be like, a cool action movie with a few hi...

A ★★★½ review of Dude Bro Party Massacre III (2015) A really charming throwback! Not so much to the '80s (despite the omnipresent portraits of Reagan) but to the online comedy scene of the late 2000s and 2010s. This has the zany, laugh-a-minute irrever...

(have you noticed that this is me. I understand the appeal of this because it's what I want to do, and am doing, in a more sneaky way. and I hate when other people do this because yes you guessed it it is a major flaw I see in myself)

09.09.2025 16:49 — 👍 0    🔁 0    💬 0    📌 0

everyone would rather be the snarky cynic who isn't sucked into any ideology, and doesn't want to be cruel but is forced, despite himself, to call out stupidity when he sees it. the internet, a machine for providing us with what we want, provides endless opportunities for this

09.09.2025 16:48 — 👍 0    🔁 0    💬 1    📌 0

oh right going back to this, what I meant to point out is that the appeal of a lot of conflict, including arguments, is that it gives us an excuse to be cruel; it's fun to be mean and dunk on people and "hypocrisy" has no defenders regardless of ideology so you can dunk away

09.09.2025 16:44 — 👍 0    🔁 0    💬 1    📌 0

the answer here is of course not to switch from "hypocrites are bad" to "people calling out hypocrites are bad" in an attempt to define new good faith discourse norms, but to really try to stop caring about discourse in general. which is hard. obviously for me lmao

is Y probably worse than supporters of Y make it sound? yeah. does that mean Y is worse than *your* opinion, Z, which you're not-so-subtly trying to get me to adopt? nah, certainly not in this adversarial context where you're probably picking who to argue with in the first place

09.09.2025 16:31 — 👍 0    🔁 0    💬 1    📌 0

it's good to understand rhetoric as the ancient greeks did, as a set of tools that can (and *will*) be used to any end, and so pointing out when someone is using one of those tools is like... "oh, when they say X they mean Y, X just sounds better" yeah, that's why they said it
